Fost, a professor of pediatrics and the history of medicine, argues that steroids and all other drugs should be allowed in sports. Sure they give users an advantage, but he argues that many other legal factors -- genetics, diet, wealth, access to gyms -- also give some athletes advantages.

,,The Olympics used to be run nude, and then somebody put on shoes and there was a great hue and cry about whether that was fair or not," he says. ,,Drugs are a relatively modern phenomenon, but seeking a competitive advantage has been going on forever."

Quote: EPO-onderzoeker Jacques de Ceaurriz

,,We are continuing to work on current erythropoietins and those of the future - you shouldn't make the mistake of thinking EPO is sorted. We know that cellular implants of EPO inserted under the skin exist, where the EPO gene has been activated. It's like insulin for diabetics, they are trying to reduce the number of injections."

,,For the moment, genetic doping does not exist. The system of distribution, its traceability are extremely closely controlled. Even in 10 or 15 years it will not be done easily. The scientific community will not let it happen.''

Quote: Harrison Pope

Pope is a Harvard University professor and the author of more than 30 papers on the illicit use of performance-enhancing drugs, including a study conducted in South Florida two years ago. He even developed a mathematical formula. You enter the height and weight and the percentage of body fat, and if an athlete scores more than 25 or 26 on a certain scale Pope worked out, and he has a lean body type, he's almost certainly doping.

"People who take steroids for a long time can often be diagnosed at a glance," Pope said. "The human body can only get so big. You can't get beyond it without help."

The formula held up in his testing of nonprofessional athletes, but who could know for sure about the pros? The number of players mysteriously adding 20 pounds of ripped muscle in the off-season seems to far outpace the reports of positive tests for steroids.

"This THG scandal is the most impressive breach of secrecy we've ever seen," Pope said. "Many of us studying this have long held a cynical view that the use of steroids was much more widespread, and that this whole thing was much more sordid than the general public appreciated. I think there is much more to come."

Quote: Sportcolumnist Shaun Powell

,,There's only one way athletes will ever be discouraged from juicing up: Death. No, not just one. That won't cut it. Steroids are here to stay unless there's a body count that rivals the one in the last movie by the new governor of California.

Steroids just haven't killed enough or scared enough people straight. In a nutshell: The number of deaths related to steroids doesn't compare to the number of dollar bills made from steroids.

Until and unless that balances out, athletes will keep chugging down those chemical shakes and getting around those annoying drug tests.''

Besides, illegal potions that promise quick bulk and potential stardom are in lock step with America's tummy-tuck values, said John Hoberman, a University of Texas professor who studies doping issues. Millions of consumers chase depression with Zoloft, calm their kids with Ritalin, spark their sex life with Viagra, and hire surgeons to suck out years of midnight snacks.

"How much longer can a modern society ask athletes to be drug-free while ordinary people are using a variety of prescribed drugs for performance-enhancing purposes?" Hoberman asked.
