2 6 - 0 1 - 2 0 0 5 Coach Suspended for Allegedly Putting Supplement In Player's Drinks
Wednesday January 26, 2005
Greenbelt, Md. (AP) - A Prince George's County high school basketball coach has been suspended for the rest of the season.
Eleanor Roosevelt High School placed Glenn Farello on leave after The Journal newspapers reported that he was being sued by a former player for allegedly putting a dietary supplement containing creatine in player's drinks.
Roosevelt Principal Sylvester Conyers said the decision to suspend Farello was made at a meeting with county school administrators Tuesday. He says the school must now support the new coach and the team.
The family of 17-year-old James Samuels is seeking 25,000 dollars in damages from the school system. The suit claims Samuels became ill in March of last year after a game and had to be taken to a hospital.
P-G schools have no formal policy that prevents teachers from giving students dietary supplements but teachers are forbidden to give out medications. The school board chairwoman says the school policy will now draft a policy on supplements.
