A WOMAN told a court today how she saw a bouncer with a “terrible look of aggression on his face” after physically throwing a customer out of a West Cumbrian bar.

Mrs Susan Taylor said that when 6ft 3in Andrew Westray returned to the bar after the incident he was so wound up he let out “some kind of animal noise”.

“He had his arms like a bodybuilder and his teeth were gritted,” she said. “The aggression on his face was terrible to see”. Mrs Taylor said that the customer, David Williams, was thrown out after being marched to the door bent double, with Westray holding his arm high behind his back.

Mrs Taylor was giving evidence on the second day of a trial at Carlisle Crown Court, where Westray, of Valley View, Little Clifton, Workington, has pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on Mr Williams in the incident at Scruples bar in Washington Street, Workington, last August bank holiday weekend.

The prosecution claims Westray threw Mr Williams head first out of the club - straight into iron railings which sliced his head open so deep his scalp was open to the bone.

“He just launched him into the night - at the very least not caring less what happened to him,” prosecuting counsel Frank Nance has told the jury. “He was putting him out roughly, to show him who was boss.

Earlier Mr Williams told the court he had been asked to leave the bar after accidentally smashing a glass. He accompanied Westray to the entrance, he said, then doubled back because he realised his friends would not know where he was unless he told them. It was then, he said, that Westray grabbed him, marched him to the door and threw him out.

The trial continues.
