A MAN who had to be subdued with CS gas while being arrested for having a knife on a Carlisle street has been found guilty of assaulting two policemen.
James Sutherland, of Higginson Mill, Denton Holme, was also convicted of having a lock-knife in a public place.
After the jury returned their unanimous verdicts at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday, Sutherland turned to them and shouted: “Shameful!”
What they did not then know was that Sutherland was already awaiting sentence for what his barrister Malcolm Dutchman-Smith described as “far more serious matters” – selling illegal drugs over the internet.
At an earlier hearing the 47-year-old had pleaded guilty to 26 charges of making offers to supply anabolic steroids – a class C drug – through a website which attracted customers not just in the UK, but in the USA, China and Italy.
He has been remanded on bail and will be sentenced for all offences on December 13.
During this week’s trial the court heard Sutherland attacked the police officer leading him away after he was arrested for carrying the knife in the Crescent in the small hours of Sunday, August 17 2003.
