ROUSES POINT, N.Y. -- A Canadian jeweler has been charged with trying to smuggle $279,775 in U.S. currency, more than 3,000 pieces of jewelry and 50 vials of suspected steroids out of the country, a U.S. customs agent said Tuesday.
Jirayr Cerrahyan stopped May 27 at the Champlain port of entry in northern New York to declare more than $250,000 in currency and a $186,703 check, but a customs officer became suspicious. A search of Cerrahyan's vehicle found another $279,755 in cash, plus the jewelry and hormone vials in a hidden compartment, said Michael Bridgeman, resident agent-in-charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Bridgeman said a common money-laundering technique is to smuggle currency out of the U.S. and then bring it back into the country.
The total value of the cash and check seized is $793,153. The jewelry's value is estimated at $169,377.
Customs agents are investigating where the money and jewelry came from and whether other laws were broken.
Cerrahyan appeared in U.S. District Court on May 28 and was ordered held without bond.
