A 17-STONE bodybuilder grabbed a terrified stranger by the throat because he did not let him pass in the street.

Rocky Sullivan, who appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on a crutch after an accident in the gym, admitted assault.

He was given a curfew order, meaning he must stay in his Long Row, Norwich, home between 7pm and 7am every night for four months.

District judge Philip Browning told him: "This was a serious offence because it was abuse and assault on a stranger in a public place.

"Having seen your previous record you are not a stranger to using violence and you are a big, strong man."

He warned 41-year-old Sullivan that if he committed a similar offence in the future a jail sentence was likely.

The court heard that unemployed Sullivan, also known as Shane Gunton, was out walking his dog when victim Robert Butcher was on his way to work.

Prosecutor Martin Ivory told the court that Mr Butcher was in Barn Road when Sullivan started swearing at him from across the street.

Sullivan crossed the road and stood face to face with Mr Butcher, subjecting him to a "barrage of abuse."

Mr Butcher crossed the road to get away from Sullivan but was followed by the defendant who was still abusing him.

Sullivan then said 'Let's have some fun' grabbing hold of him by the arm and back and pushing him.

Despite Mr Butcher pleading with him to let him go, Sullivan put his forearm in front of his throat and continued being abusive.

After Sullivan released him go he had some reddening to his neck, the buttons had been ripped off his shirt and two chains he was wearing were damaged.

Ian Fisher, for Sullivan, said it was a busy time of day and there had been a lot of people wanting to cross the road at the traffic lights.

According to Sullivan he was trying to get onto the pavement, but Mr Butcher would not move out of the way.

Sullivan "eased him to one side with a push" and then there was some "transient grappling," said Mr Fisher.

"I don't know what the pedestrian equivalent of road rage is. It wasn't quite as bad as that; I suppose irritation on the part of Mr Sullivan."

The defendant, he added, was currently on incapacity benefit after damaging his leg in an accident in the gym.
