0 5 - 0 2 - 2 0 0 5 Families Sue RGV Stock Show Over Drugged Animals
February 5, 2005
FEBRUARY 4, 2005 - Three families are suing the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show for thousands of dollars in prizes that were revoked last year after the animals their children raised tested positive for steroids. The children forfeited prizes of $25,000 for a grand champion steer and $10,000 for a grand champion lamb after urine samples detected the anti-inflammatory drug Dexamethasone. They were also banned from future competition. The lawsuit blames lax security at the livestock show grounds for any animal drugging, saying there were no guards to prevent tampering with the animals in the show barn. The families also want their children to be allowed to compete at the stock show again. Livestock show officials denied any wrongdoing and said they don't plan to change any policies at this year's show. General Manager Jim Beale said it makes no difference who drugged the animals or placed drugs in their feed. "There is zero tolerance for banned substances in the animals," he said in Friday's editions of the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen. "It doesn't matter if the kid knew or didn't know." A security guard for each animal would be too costly, he said, and fencing off the livestock barns from the public would defeat the educational purpose of the event. Beale also questioned why anyone would sabotage the animals. He said that even if the prize is taken away for the original winners, the next best animal does not become the winner. A hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 24. |
