WHITMAN — A Franklin Street man was arrested for possession of child pornography after he purchased a videotape depicting a 9-year-old girl engaging in sexual activity, police said.
Brian Reiss, 36, of 16 Franklin St. was arrested Thursday minutes after receiving delivery of the videotape, after local police and federal agents executed a search warrant at his home.
Detective Stephen Drass of the Whitman Police Department said Reiss ordered the video, and the U.S. Postal Service set up a controlled delivery of the tape.
Drass said that 10 minutes after Reiss accepted delivery, police and federal agents executed a search warrant at his home and found him watching the tape. The search also revealed 15 hypodermic needles, five vials of steroids and 25 steroid pills, police said.
Police seized a laptop computer and tower computer, which were sent to a forensic laboratory. "Just from what I had to view on it, he had 311 pages in the computer with two pictures on each page," said Drass. "Some you'd probably need a medical professional to see if they involved minors, but some are clearly 8-, 9- or 10-year-olds."
Drass said Reiss signed a statement admitting to knowingly purchasing the video and possession of the computer pornography, but said he did so "out of curiosity." "He admitted to all of this. He has admitted to downloading pictures since 1999," said Drass.
Drass said Reiss denied taking any of the photographs on his computers, and said that outside of a firearm charge that was later dismissed, he has not been in trouble with police.
Whitman police were contacted by agents and the U.S. Postal Service after Reiss ordered the tape, and the search warrant was executed with federal agents as well as local police in 2004.
Reiss faces five years in state prison on the child pornography charges, but Drass said such charges often result in a period of probation and having to register as a sex offender.
Reiss was arrested Thursday and arraigned in Brockton District Court on Friday.
Drass said police hope Reiss will be ordered to register as a sex offender so they can protect the community. "We want to be able to keep track of him and make sure he's not doing it any more," said Drass. Reiss told police he was employed as a graphic artist for The Enterprise.
