2 5 - 0 3 - 2 0 0 5 Steroid bust at airport
By Michelle Durand
A Michigan man who had been teaching English in Asia was nabbed with steroid pills and cash at San Francisco International Airport during a customs search earlier this week.
Lance Chmura, 35, of Waterford, Mich., pleaded not guilty to one felony and one misdemeanor drug charge. Chmura appeared in court for initial arraignment Wednesday afternoon and did not waive time for a speedy trial. He was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the evidence April 6.
Chmura was arrested by airport police March 21 after customs officers reportedly found 43 pills of Alprazolam, 175 pills of Oxandrolone and $7,000 in cash. Chmura was on his way home after a stint teaching English in China and Korea, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Authorities believe the pills were brought from China.
Oxandrolone is an anabolic steroid used to prevent wasting in AIDS patients and children with growth disorders. Athletes adopt its use to enhance strength and performance. Alprazolam is typically known by its brand name, Xanax, and used to combat anxiety.
Chmura remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail. If ultimately convicted, he faces up to four years in prison.
