Bodybuilder, pharmacist nabbed
BY BOB KAPPSTATTER
A Bronx bodybuilder and a pharmacist are facing federal charges involving illegal distribution of steroids. Federal authorities charged the bodybuilder with illegally distributing them in the Bronx and Manhattan, and the pharmacist with selling them without prescriptions. According to a criminal information filed in Manhattan Federal Court, Rafel Olivo arranged in December to meet and sell steroids at Steel Gym in Manhattan. Law enforcement investigators for the Drug Enforcement Administration, the NYPD and the state police crashed the arranged meeting and recovered large quantities of steroids in Olivo's car. Later the same day, according to the complaint, investigators obtained a search warrant for Olivo's home and discovered an even larger stash of anabolic steroids intended for distribution. Manhattan U.S. Attorney David Kelley said that if convicted of the charges of distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute, Olivo faces five years' imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. The pharmacist, Kenneth Ferst, 56, was charged with illegally distributing a controlled substance, anabolic steroids, to a person who did not have a prescription for them. Ferst is the owner of Whitestone Pharmacy at 3838 E. Tremont Ave. in the Bronx. According to the criminal information, Ferst, on three occasions from December 2004 through February 2005, sold nandrolone decanoate, an injectable anabolic steroid known to increase muscle mass, and tamoxifen citrate, a medicine commonly used to counteract gynecomastia - male breast enlargement, often suffered by bodybuilders who use steroids - to an individual who was cooperating with the authorities. Kelley said that if convicted, Ferst faces five years' imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.
