Investigators seized $8 million of growth hormone and anabolic steroids and made one arrest yesterday in a raid at a Brooklyn pharmacy, law enforcement officials said.
The investigation also found that six New York City police officers had filled prescriptions for steroids at the pharmacy, the police said. Those officers are now under an internal affairs review for possible misuse of drugs for bodybuilding, the police said. Such abuse would subject the officers to disciplinary action but not to criminal prosecution, the police said.
The drugs were seized at Lowen’s Pharmacy in Bay Ridge, and investigators said they arrested the store’s vice president, Edward Letendre. Investigators identified one co-owner of the pharmacy as John Rossi, but no charges had been filed against him. In May, the authorities confiscated more than $100,000 worth of illegal steroids from Lowen’s.
Yesterday’s raid, carried out by the city police and the state health department’s Bureau of Narcotics Enforcement, stems from early investigations by the Albany district attorney, P. David Soares, into steroid abuses involving Signature Pharmacy in Orlando, Fla.
Signature Pharmacy sold tens of millions of dollars of steroids across the nation, including at least $10 million in New York State, and professional athletes were among the customers, law enforcement sources have said.
Investigators said they are focusing on the involvement of organized crime in the illegal sales of steroids and growth hormones.
