Finnish distance runner Vainio admits taking drugs
Daily Times LONDON: Former Finnish distance runner Martti Vainio has admitted taking drugs before the inaugural 1983 Helsinki world championships. In his autobiography “Spikes and Dance Shoes” published on Thursday, Vainio said he had taken the male sex hormone testosterone four times before the championships. Vainio finished third in the 5,000 metres and fourth in the 10,000. “I had an injection of testosterone, the first of my life, a week before the championships started,” he said. “Altogether I had four injections.” Vainio also said he had tested positive at the 1984 Rotterdam marathon but the result had been suppressed by Finnish authorities. He said widespread doping had been common in Finnish athletics before 1983. “I remember a meeting for long distance runners at Vierumaki (the sports institute),” he said. “There it was decided that everything should be done so that Finnish running should be among the best in the world. “Care should be taken so that nothing came out.” Vainio was banned for 18 months following a positive test after he finished second in the 10,000 metres at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Before the Games the Finn had reinjected stored blood containing steroids. |
