'Anabolen bedreigen jeugd Libanon'

BEIRUT: Parliament held a question and answer session
Thursday, during which the government denied allegations of
mismanagement.
Baalbek MP Ismail Sukkariyeh posed queries related to certain additives used in
poultry rearing contained substances harmful to humans.
"In the absence of state control, these banned additives enter
the Lebanese diet through the consumption of large amounts of
fowl and poultry," he said. "The poisons come through
additives containing anabolic and carcinogenic substances and
through feeds that contain poisonous additives."
The legislator directly accused the government of permitting
the import of internationally banned and illegal additives and
other related products.
The government denied the accusation, saying it was
"monitoring every development in the world and all the
specialized publications, especially those from the UN
International Health Organization, to check what types of
products were identified as harmful or banned."
As for the additives, the government said there was no need to
control imports because these products deal with controlling
the size, color and taste of the final product.
The government promised to look into a related proposal that
deals with organizing animal pharmaceutical products, "to
supervise the quality and side effects of such products to
human health."
