2 3 - 0 2 - 2 0 0 5 Hampden man sentenced for party melee
Tuesday, February 22, 2005
SPRINGFIELD - A 21-year-old Hampden man was sentenced to a total of 3½ years in Hampden County Correctional Center in Ludlow followed by three years probation after pleading guilty Feb. 18 to a series of charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on civilians and police. Joshua Adams, who had lived at 59 Old Orchard Road prior to his arrest Aug. 8, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and battery on a police officer; four counts of malicious destruction of property; one count of disturbing court in session; two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, and one count of assault and battery. Assistant District Attorney Timothy Rogers had asked for a three to four year state prison sentence. Defense lawyer Perman Glenn had asked for one year at the Hampden County Correctional Center, followed by three years probation. Both Rogers and Glenn said in Hampden Superior Court that steroid use by Adams played a role in the crimes. Rogers said that police were called to Adams' home about 5 a.m. for a report of someone smashing the windows of a car. Police found that Adams had attacked his girlfriend, men at the party had tried to intervene, and Adams came back with an ax and a surgical scalpel, swinging the ax and hitting one man on the elbow. Officials said Adams also got a BB gun and chased people around, then damaged the car. When he was put in a cruiser he broke a rear window with his head. At the police station he kicked his cell door, breaking a deadbolt. He walked out of the cell and damaged a copier and telephone. Wilbraham police were called to help. One Wilbraham officer tried to put Adams in the cruiser and he tried to bite him, then spit in two officers' faces and told the booking sergeant he would kill him and his family. He was put in the same cruiser and kicked the other rear window out. At a hearing in Palmer District Court held to determine if he was too dangerous to be let out on bail he verbally abused the judge after she announced her decision that he was, and then punched a copy machine in lockup there. Rogers said Adams had a record of consistent violent behavior toward authorities. He said Adams had already served a state prison sentence for violation of probation and now should go to state prison. Glenn said that state prison was not appropriate for events stemming from a "drunken beer party. "Steroid use is certainly the case here," he said. "He was mixing steroids with alcohol." Judge Bertha Josephson sentenced Adams to 2½ years in jail on the assault and battery on a police officer charges, followed by a year jail sentence for disturbing court in session. Adams must also pay $940 restitution to Hampden for destruction of property. |
