MOTHER IN INSULIN WARNING

Daily Record
28 May 2007

A DEVASTATED mum is warning men not to look for "fast fixes" after her bodybuilder son was left braindead because he took insulin.

Paul Winton, 26, was found unconscious in his flat hours after sending his mum Irene a happy birthday text message.

Irene was unaware that Paul, who was studying in Edinburgh, was taking the diabetes drug to help him bulk up.

Now the 64-year-old, from Rattray, Perthshire, is determined to stop other young men risking their lives in the drive to build bigger muscles.

Irene said yesterday: "Magazines are full of pictures of what you should look like and that's the trap my son fell into.

"When I asked him about drugs, he looked horrified but he had been on steroids.

"I had no idea he was taking insulin or how he got hold of it."

"I've got to warn as many people as I can about the dangers of these drugs because I don't want any other parent going through what I'm facing at the moment."

Paul worked as a bouncer at Edinburgh's Tiger Lilly Bar to supplement his course at the city's Telford College and was determined to bulk up.

Tragically, he chose to boost his muscles by using large amounts of insulin, which is normally given to diabetics to help control their blood-sugar level.

But the use of the hormone can also increase muscle mass by increasing the flow of glucose, meaning it is open to abuse by bodybuilders.

Paul was taken to Edinburgh's Royal Infirmary on May 14 after lapsing into a coma but, soon after he was admitted, a brain scan showed no activity.
