Het is begonnen: FDA zegt supplementenindustrie dat verkoop precursoren moet stoppen (Associated Press) [Offline] ,,The FDA expects its action to at least temporarily halt andro sale. Meanwhile, Congress is considering legislation sponsored by Sen. Joe Biden, that would permanently end over-the-counter sales of andro.''

Het is begonnen: FDA Set to Crack Down on 'Andro' Producers (HealthDay) [Offline] ,,The agency is expected to tell the manufacturers on Thursday to stop selling the supplement, commonly known as "andro," unless they can demonstrate it's not dangerous, the news agency says. Andro is what's known as a steroid precursor, meaning the body uses it to make testosterone. And that means it poses the same health risks as an anabolic steroid, the FDA is expected to say in warnings to 23 manufacturers of the supplement, the AP says.''

Het is begonnen: Persbericht Amerikaans ministerie van gezondheid (FDA) [Offline] ,,HHS' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today sent warning letters to 23 companies asking them to cease distributing products sold as dietary supplements that contain androstenedione and warning them that they could face enforcement actions if they do not take appropriate actions.''

,,I would like to make clear that dietary supplements are not steroids. While some companies may have chosen to break the law by masquerading steroids as a dietary supplement it does not change that indisputable fact.''
,,The tribunal ruling underscores the problem of nandrolone contamination that we identified last year and still face today," said ATP chief executive officer Mark Miles.''

Schwarzenegger: Toezicht op supplementen is niet nodig (Reuters) [Offline] ,,I have always campaigned against the FDA getting involved in food supplements. I have very rarely seen the government do anything that was effective."

Franse regering gaat dopingschandaal worstelen onderzoeken (Reuters) [Offline] ,,The French sports ministry is to launch an investigation into an alleged doping scandal in wrestling dating back to the 1980's. Sports daily L'Equipe on Tuesday quoted former French wrestling champions saying they were given performance-enhancing drugs before the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

"The president of the (French Wrestling) federation (Jean-Michel Brun) contacted the sports ministry and asked them to investigate this case," the federation's spokesman Eric Culino said on Tuesday.
,,The former French champions told L'Equipe they had been given anabolic steroids before the Los Angeles Olympics. "At the beginning, I was told it was vitamin B12," Robert Bouchoule, a Greco-Roman wrestling specialist, was quoted as saying in L'Equipe. "And one day there were no more vials so I was told to go to the chemist... When I read it (the prescription) I realised it was not vitamin B12 but Strombaject."
Michel Belmer, champion of France six times, said everybody wanted to qualify for the Olympic Games and he was advised to take what were then called tonics.
"So I agreed to be given shots three or four times a week. I learned later that it was Strombaject," Belmer said.
Georges Marx, a five-times French Greco-Roman wrestling champion, told L'Equipe he was forced to take the banned substance.''

Het is reuze gezellig op The Arnold (New York Daily News) [Offline] Ietwat cynisch nieuwsbericht over The Arnold. ,,The only problem is, many fans didn't recognize the still enormous Ferrigno. "I'm here to spread a positive message," Ferrigno said. Asked about Conte, Ferrigno looked puzzled, saying, "I don't know who that is."''
,,Cytodyne is now pitching a replacement for RFA-1, Xenadrine NRG. A spokesman at the booth was eager to talk about the new product and a company comeback, but not about Bechler: "That ruined us. The guy had nothing in his stomach at the time of death. He was overweight, had kidney problems and was running in the heat."
Xenadrine NRG has replaced ephedra with Norambrolide, which Cytodyne describes as a "c-AMP accelerator." One dose is supposed to keep a person energized for eight hours while continuing to burn fat.
In another aisle, Rebecca Ryann pushed CreaPure for Ultimate Nutrition and said the exposure didn't do her Internet porn site any harm. "I just signed a new contract with (Ultimate Nutrition) to be a spokesmodel," she gushed.''

Journalist schrijft boek over efedra-affaire (Bowling Green Kentucky Daily News) [Offline] ,,Journalist Mike Fillon recently wrote a book, "Ephedra Fact & Fiction," which deals with the government's enduring struggle with the proposed ban. "They can't prove that it is dangerous," Fillon said in an interview with Woodland Health Report newsletter in November. "There is no proof. The idea is to turn the public perception against ephedra ... We do not know if ephedra is safe or not. This is the bottom line."''

,,What's next, a gym?''

Op The Arnold maakt Arnold gevaarlijke deals, zegt watchdog (Associated Press) [Offline] ,,Government watchdog Doug Heller, who maintains the arnoldwatch.org Web site [Link], said the business relationships at The Arnold are reason for concern in California. "When Schwarzenegger is presented with legislation that conflicts with the interests of sponsors of the Arnold Classic, how is he going to serve both masters?" Heller asked. "Schwarzenegger, because of these business relationships, may not be putting the public interest first."

Renners Cofidis kregen cocaïne (Associated Press) [Offline] ,,Products seized during an investigation centering on France's Cofidis cycling team included cocaine, the police said Friday. Earlier in the investigation, the police had found vials of testosterone, the performance enhancer EPO and amphetamines. New test results also confirmed that cocaine was among the substances seized, the police said.''

EAS goes mainstream (Rocky Mountain News) [Offline] ,,Going after the much larger consumer market has paid off. Last year, the privately held company had sales of $300 million, about double the amount it booked the year it was sold, said CEO Monty Sharma. The goal is $1 billion in sales by 2008.
Growth potential among mass-market consumers is also the reason for a new, $5 million ad campaign touting Myoplex products. Formerly marketed to bodybuilders and pro athletes, the new ads target healthy active people with the tagline "Feed your Potential."''

Cateraars smokkelen anabolen cel in

Dwarsligger Norman Fost: Mediahype over androgenen is onzinnig (Miami Herald) [Offline] ,,Liver cancer? There's no evidence I can find anywhere to support you can get liver cancer from steroids. Injectibles don't even go to the liver or gut. And yet I see it repeated over and over again in news accounts, a photocopied paragraph borrowed from previous news accounts linking it to liver cancer. It's laziness. It shouldn't be repeated. It's not true. No doctor says it is.''

,,Conte's attorney, Robert Holley, was asked whether Schwarzenegger, a seven-time Mr. Olympia who has admitted using steroids during his bodybuilding career, had taken any of Conte's supplements. "I don't know, but I'm sure that we'd be happy to send him a free sample of ZMA," Holley said.''

(San Jose Mercury News) [Offline] ,,The leak that prompted the lawyers' demand for an investigation appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle on Tuesday. The newspaper reported that it had seen "information" that had been given to the federal government. That information, the Chronicle reported, alleged that Giants star Barry Bonds and other baseball players received steroids from Balco.
The two lawyers said the information appears to be a memorandum of conversations that Conte and Valente had with investigators searching Balco last September. "It is very apparent that there was a great amount of information in these documents which is either untrue or given a very preferential spin by those government agents," Holley said.''

In his annual report, Police Chief Gary Mason said the department endured a tough year in 2003, but managed to make strides in crime prevention. In one operation 18,500 doses of steroids were seized. The street value was an estimated $550,000.'' Meer over deze zaak vind je [hier]

Advocaten in Balco-zaak: THG is helemaal geen anabool (Contra Costa Times) [Offline] ,,So, just how plausible are those defenses? Not very, doping and legal experts said. "Denial usually is the first line of defense," said Rick Collins, a New York-based defense attorney who specializes in steroid cases. "But inevitably, as in any case, this will come down to physical evidence."
Don Catlin, head of the UCLA Olympic drug laboratory that detected THG: "The bottom line is that this definitely is a steroid."
But did the athletes know that? Not all doping experts are convinced that every athlete knew what BALCO allegedly dealt them. John Hoberman, a University of Texas professor who has written about sports and steroids, said he got a call in November from Romanowski, a longtime champion of Conte and one of four Raiders who tested positive for THG.
"He was raising questions as to whether THG was a steroid, which I thought was a red herring," Hoberman said, recalling the conversation. "It was my impression that he may not have known what was being sold to him. I'm not sure he knew he was getting the THG at all, and I'm not sure he understood what it was."
That's not to say Romanowski and other athletes weren't aware that they were receiving performance-enhancing substances, Hoberman added. "That's what they were paying for," he said. "The question is whether (Conte) was being upfront with them about what they were getting."
Still, Hoberman said he remains skeptical of the ignorance claims by athletes who are caught. "We've seen lots of evidence that people have lied and lied and lied," he said. "When you're talking to people about this subject, you realize one of the great side effects of steroids is they cause people to lie."
