Veterinaire anabolenring opgerold
Italian police say they have broken an international drug-smuggling ring which dealt with products to dope racehorses.
Ten people were charged with a variety of offences, including sports fraud, after 400 vials of anabolic steroids and hormones were seized in Rome, mainly
stanazolol and ACTH.
Police claim the ring imported substances from Argentina, Canada and Australia using anonymous mailings and delivered them to vets and stables around
Italy. Owners, trainers and jockeys in Tuscany, Lazio and Sicily are among 10 people accused of being wrapped up involved in the scam masterminded by a
feed vendor.
The raid follows a year-long surveillance operation in Rome. The suspects are accused of crimes including sports fraud, receiving of stolen property, forging veterinary certificates, buying and selling foreign drugs without the required subscription and authorisation by the Health Ministry.
Police said part of their evidence is a three-year-old British thoroughbred which they seized at a farmhouse near Rome three months ago after suspicions that it had been doped before a race.
