Quote: dopingjournalist T. C. Luoma over ZMA
Conte, in court documents, said he used an abstract from the study to secure an exclusive manufacturing and distribution agreement with Experimental and
Applied Sciences Inc (EAS), which planned to sell the supplement under its own label for $75,000 in advance royalties. The deal dissolved within four
months, in part because EAS believed Conte was distributing ZMA under other labels. After a settlement, Conte struck agreements to distribute ZMA
through EAS and other companies.
One of those, Biotest, sells nutritional supplements that convert into steroids and publishes Testosterone Magazine, which advises readers on proper steroid use.
T.C. Luoma, a Biotest partner who edits the magazine, said ZMA's success was ,,pretty much a question of good marketing. It's just zinc and magnesium''.
,,The supplement industry caters to the average mentality of a 14-year-old. If you just use a lot of hyperbole, and if you don't have any
shame you can make a lot of money in this business. It's kind of tragic, really."

Quote: Rick Collins
,,The cat-and-mouse game will continue as long as there is a willingness on the part of the athlete,'' said Rick Collins, the author of Legal Muscle: Anabolics in America. ,,There will always be available tools. Genetic engineering is on the horizon. The sanctions are a drop in the bucket compared to the rewards.''
The federal government passed a law in 1990 that banned all known steroids. The effect? It certainly hasn't ended steroid use in sports. Now legislators want to come up with a broader anti-steroid law.
Collins, an attorney in private practice, estimates that he has been consulted by more than 1,000 people -- regular Joes -- who either were being investigated for steroid involvement or had been arrested for possession as a result of the 1990 law.
,,They weren't teenagers or competitive athletes,'' he said. ,,They were overwhelmingly men in their 20s, 30s and 40s who were using steroids for personal cosmetic reasons. These are your friends and neighbors competing against Father Time. And each of these arrests costs thousands of dollars and ties up law enforcement and court dockets.''
,,The predicted epidemic of people keeling over from steroid use has never happened,'' Collins said. ,,We shouldn't take that to mean there aren't risks, but aren't the risks heightened when doctors are removed from the equation? People are getting them through the black market. China, Eastern Europe, Mexico and Thailand all are producing tons of product.''
Carol Slezak.
