"Under terms of the proposed settlement Nutraquest Inc., Phoenix Laboratories and General Nutrition Corp.
would share equally in paying $75,000 in cash to the player's family. The family would have another $25,000
in unsecured claims against Nutraquest, which filed for bankruptcy protection last year.
The supplement companies were quick to state in court papers that Xenadrine RFA-1, a supplement containing the
stimulant ephredra, did not kill Wheeler and that they were settling to "avoid the time, expense and risk of further
litigation."
Indeed, Wheeler's parents have not blamed the supplement companies for their son's death but agreed to the
settlement as part of a larger legal strategy.
Wheeler's parents say their son suffered an exercised-induced asthma attack while running an involuntary
football drill on a Northwestern practice field on Aug. 3, 2001. They say that after their son collapsed
university officials delayed in summoning emergency help, treated him improperly and later tried to cover
up mistakes.
Northwestern, however, claims Wheeler had taken banned performance-enhancing supplements before the drill and
the supplements triggered an irregular heartbeat, which killed him. The university sued the companies that made
and distributed the supplements, including GNC, Phoenix Labs and Nutraquest."

"The Centre for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
saying one company, Berkeley Premium Nutraceuticals, has crossed the line in television advertisements touting
its supplement Enzyte.
"It contains tiny amounts of 16 ingredients including ginkgo and ginseng, the minerals
copper and zinc ... a vitamin (niacin), and an amino acid (arginine)," the CSPI says.
According to the company's
website, it also contains horny goat weed extract and saw palmetto, the latter usually sold as a prostate supplement.
The CSPI says tests show that some of the ingredients may work to enhance sexual performance.
"One study
suggests that 5 000mg daily of arginine may lead to a subjective improvement in sexual function. However, as
Enzyte's label says each tablet contains 1 494mg of its proprietary blend (all ingredients other than niacin, zinc,
and copper), it is not possible that Enzyte contains the amounts of those ingredients that may be necessary to increase
libido or sexual performance.""

"Marseille Maras, 22, was charged after bottles and vials of illegal anabolic steroids
were found during a raid of his Turner home. Some of the vials were found in post bags
marked for Sydney and police allege Maras had ordered hundreds of labels for bottles
and eye droppers as part of an illicit sales plan.
Marseille Maras had previously
told the court he was posting the steroids for another man who was threatening him.
Chief Magistrate Ron Cahill warned Maras the charges were very serious and he would
have faced time in prison if he had been more involved in the scheme.
Maras was
given a 12 month suspended jail term and three year good behaviour bond."

CERA (Continuous Erythropoiesis Receptor Activator) ist eine

Hoffmann-La Roche, NeoRecormon®.
Der Unterschied zu den
bisherigen EPO-Produkten liegt in einer zusätzlichen
Kohlenstoff-Sauerstoffkette (Methoxypolyethylenglycol-polymer),
die mit dem EPO-Molekül verknüpft ist. Das Molekulargewicht
dieser Kette liegt bei etwa 32.000 (32kD).
Durch diese
Modifikation wird die Affinität des EPO-Derivates zum
EPO-Rezeptor deutlich erhöht. Die Halbwerstzeit liegt bei etwa
133h, im Vergleich zum rEPO, das eine Halbwertszeit nach
intravenöser Injektion von ca. 4-12h aufweist. CERA befindet
sich aktuell in der 3.Klinischen Phase, und es wird damit
gerechnet, dass es erst 2006/07 zugelassen wird.
Dass CERA bereits missbräuchlich im Sport eingesetzt wird, kann
zur Zeit nicht bestätigt werden. Für den analytischen Nachweis von
CERA hat die Firma Hoffmann-La Roche einen empfindlichen
Elisa-Test entwickelt. Es wird angenommen, dass der EPO
Urintests zum CERA-Nachweis eingesetzt werden kann. Hierzu
fehlen aber noch wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen."
