"Onder het motto 'Slik niet zomaar alles' is Pfizer 11 augustus een
landelijke campagne begonnen tegen nep-Viagra. Folders bij de apotheek
wijzen mannen op de gevaren van illegale erectiepillen.
De omvang van deze malafide handel neemt aanzienlijke vormen aan, geeft
ook Pfizer toe. De illegale pillen worden in allerlei soorten en maten
aangeboden. Behalve via internet zijn illegale pillen ook te koop in
smartshops, sauna's en trendy discotheken. Volgens een woordvoerder van
Pfizer lijken de aangeboden neppillen steeds overtuigender op de echte
Viagrapillen. “We hebben ondertussen een dagtaak aan het verweer tegen
illegale handelaren”, stelt hij. “Als wij signaleren dat neppillen worden
aangeboden, geven wij dit door aan de daarvoor verantwoordelijke
instanties zoals FIOD-ECD en de Inspectie voor de Gezondheidszorg (IGZ).”"

"According to Jeffrey Klausner, numerous studies have found an
association between Viagra use and higher rates of risky
sexual behavior that can lead to HIV infection. He co-authored
a study published in the journal AIDS in 2002 that found 31
percent of a group of gay men who engage in risky sex were
using Viagra outside medical supervision. Within this group,
the drug was associated with higher rates of both unprotected
sex and sexually transmitted disease.
A study of gay men presented at the 15th International AIDS
Conference in Bangkok last month by San Francisco Health
Department researchers found Viagra users were twice as likely
to be infected with HIV.
Klausner said Viagra itself is not necessarily the direct
cause of higher rates of HIV infection, but may be
contributing to higher rates of other sexually transmitted
diseases that make patients more vulnerable to the AIDS virus.
However, he said the problem is not just a behavioral issue
involving the use of a performance-enhancing drug among those
who engage in high-risk sex. The longer duration of sexual
activity that erectile dysfunction drugs make possible may
increase tearing of tissues that become portals for infection
into the bloodstream.
The link between recreational use of Viagra and higher rates
of HIV has raised concern among some AIDS prevention groups in
San Francisco. "Any time you take a drug that increases the
longevity of your sexual experience, the more likely you are
to be exposed to types of sexually transmitted diseases,''
said Jason Riggs, a spokesman for the Stop AIDS project in San
Francisco.
Riggs said his organization supports the petition because of
its concern about the use of Viagra in combination with
crystal methamphetamine.
"Crystal use is one of top reasons new infections are
occurring among gay men in San Francisco and across the
country,'' said Riggs.
Tom Kennedy, coordinator for Tweaker.com, an online resource
for gay men who are seeking to reduce their use of crystal
methamphetamine, said the use of Viagra is widespread among
those taking the illegal drug. One of the side effects of
methamphetamine use is loss of an erection, and crystal users
have been taking Viagra "ever since it came on the market,''
he said."
