"It is the drug that left a shadow over the death, at 38, of Florence Griffith-Joyner. The American died
in 1998 after an apparent heart seizure in her sleep. Flo-Jo had transformed her body in her mid-20s, and was later
accused of using HGH. Her post-mortem showed signs of excessive growth of organs, including her heart, which
contributed to her death and may have been a direct result of drug use.
Suspicions about Griffith-Joyner began at the start of the 1988 season, when she returned after a long lay-off
and set a world 100m record of 10.49sec, an improvement on the previous mark of 0.27sec.
A year after winning the 100 and 200m in Seoul, Flo-Jo was accused by a fellow American sprinter, Darrell Robinson,
in a paid interview with a German magazine, of taking HGH.
He claimed she had asked him to find out the cost of HGH. When he later told her it was $2,000, she allegedly replied:
"If you want to make a million dollars, you've got to invest a couple of thousand."
He said he bought the HGH from a bodybuilder in Los Angeles and that one evening he slipped the drugs into Flo-Jo's
training bag after being paid with 20 $100 bills."

using banned performance-enhancing drugs during the 2000 Games in Sydney where she won five medals, two newspapers

The San Francisco Chronicle said C.J. Hunter told Internal Revenue Service investigators pursuing the Bay Area Laboratory
Co-Operative case that he personally injected his then-wife with banned substances and saw Jones inject herself with
the drugs at their home in Australia. Human growth hormone, the steroid THG, insulin and the endurance-boosting drug EPO
were among the substances Hunter alleged that Jones used.
Citing investigators' memos, the Chronicle reported that Hunter gave a 21/2-hour interview to IRS investigators on June
8 in Raleigh, N.C., and had a follow-up call a week later. During the interview, Hunter alleged that Jones had used
banned substances before, during and after the Sydney Olympics.
"Hunter stated that he saw Jones inject herself with EPO," IRS agent Erwin Rogers wrote in one of the memos quoted by
the Chronicle. "Jones would inject herself in the front waist line area slightly underneath the skin. ... Initially,
Hunter injected Jones because Jones did not want to inject herself in this location."
Hunter alleged that Jones obtained performance-enhancing drugs from Victor Conte, owner of BALCO, and from her coach,
Trevor Graham. Conte has pleaded not guilty to steroid conspiracy charges and Graham denied to investigators that he
supplied Jones with steroids."
