ST. PETERSBURG -- A businessman with Israeli citizenship was kidnapped on Nevsky Prospekt in central St. Petersburg, city police said Thursday.

Police spokesman Pavel Rayevsky said the man was pushed into a parked car and driven away at 10 a.m. Wednesday. He provided no further details.

The businessman, Boris Suris, 33, heads a company, Achlama, which imports nutritional supplements from Los Angeles-based company Herbalife.

His wife, Irena Suris, who lives near Tel Aviv, told Israel's Channel 10 television that she phoned her father-in-law in Russia after not hearing from her husband, a dual national, Reuters reported.

"He told me that someone kidnapped Boris at 10 in the morning and there were witnesses," Suris said. "There were three men that took him and forced him into a black car and that's it."

The Agency of Journalistic Investigations, in St. Petersburg, said the kidnappers have demanded money from the Suris family. A few hours after the kidnapping, his father, Pavel Suris, got a phone call from an unidentified caller, who told him to take an audio tape from a mailbox, the agency said, citing police sources.

The tape contained the kidnappers' demands, which according to police did not specify how much should be paid.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said it was aware of the kidnapping but did not know the circumstances, Reuters reported.
