Bodybuildster hakt hoofd af
Een beroemde Finse bodybuildster, die furore maakt in de nationale versie van de spelshow The Gladiators,
staat terecht voor moord. Ze liep rond in kroegen met het afgehakte hoofd van een man, die overigens
gedeeltelijk was opgegeten door haar levensgezel. Dat melden Scandinavische websites.
De 31-jarige Virpi Butt gebruikt volgens kranten anabolen en drugs. De media melden verder dat ze
gewelddadig wordt als ze drinkt, en dat ze in de onderwereld van haar woonplaats Tammerfors bekend staat als
een gevaarlijke vrouw. Dat is terecht, blijkt tijdens een rechtszaak tegen de atlete
en haar vriend.
Virpi was wezen stappen met een man met wie ze een etmaal had doorgebracht. Toen dat voorbij was stak Virpi
hem neer, ook al was er van ruzie geen sprake. Daarna belde de bodybuildster haar vriend, die haar hielp met
het in stukken zagen van het lichaam. Toen de klus geklaard was, pakte Virpi het afgehakte hoofd in en nam
het mee de stad in waar ze het liet zien aan kroegbezoekers. Niemand geloofde echter dat het een echt hoofd was.

Finse dopingjager schetst stand van zaken zwarte markt anabolen
Van elke drie anabolengebruikers wordt er eentje agressief. Vooral als de gebruikers daarbij alcohol
drinken verliezen ze daarbij ook hun zelfbeheersing, vermoedt de Finse dopingjager Timo Seppälä. Hij heeft
het verband tussen agressiviteit, anabolen en alcohol wel eens willen onderzoeken, maar een ethische
commissie floot hem terug.
Seppälä deed zijn uitspraken in de Helsingin Sanomat, in een artikel dat is geschreven naar aanleiding
van de rechtszaak rond bodybuildster en TV-gladiatrix Virpi Butt. Butt werd gearresteerd omdat ze rondliep
met een afgehakt hoofd.
Seppälä schat het aantal dopinggebruikers in het vijf miljoen inwoners tellende land op 15.000, en
portretteert de gemiddelde dopinggebruiker als een jonge man die traint met gewichten en graag snel vorderingen
wil maken. Topsporters vormen maar een klein deel van de totale gebruikersgroep.
Hoewel in Finland de handel in anabolica is verboden - net als in Nederland is het bezit niet strafbaar -
is het in Finland niet moeilijk om aan doping te komen. Jaarlijks nemen de autoriteiten middelen in beslag,
maar wat ze precies vinden is onbekend omdat niemand de statistieken bijhoudt. Tweederde van de spullen
wordt gevonden op de luchthaven, waardoor het vermoeden bestaat dat het vliegtuig de voornaamste aanvoerroute
is. Productielanden zijn Thailand, Spanje, Griekenland en natuurlijk Rusland. Een groeiend aantal gebruikers
krijgt zijn middelen via de post.
Er zijn twee nieuwe trends in de dopinghandel. Agenten nemen steeds vaker grote hoeveelheden in één keer in
beslag, waarschijnlijk omdat de anabolensmokkel in toenemende mate 'georganiseerd' plaatsvindt. In de tweede
plaats vinden agenten steeds vaker dopingmiddelen bij drughandelaars.

Life sentences handed down for grisly "cutting-up" murders

The Tampere District Court handed down life sentences yesterday on Virpi Butt,
31, a former performer on the TV show Gladiators, and her friend Janne
Hyvönen, 27. Butt’s sentence was for a murder committed at Midsummer last
year, while Hyvönen was convicted of the murder of another man a year earlier.
In both cases, the court also added the charge of defacing the body of the
deceased, which in this instance refers to the cutting up of the murdered male
victims, the displaying of parts of their bodies in public, and the subsequent
disposal of the corpses in garbage containers.
The murders were of a particularly savage and brutal nature, and the perpetrators
were not deemed to have been of diminished responsibility at the times of the
killings, though no logical motive could be found in either case.
Butt and Hyvönen were both remanded in custody last year, when their actions
began to be revealed in the wake of the second murder. Two men who were asked
by the killers to assist them were given suspended prison sentences, one for gross
negligence in the reporting of a crime, and the other for aiding and abetting a felon.
Hyvönen killed the first victim, a 29-year-old man, in Butt’s apartment in May of
2002. The man had been going out with Butt for some time prior to his murder.
He was brought from a restaurant to the apartment in a state of considerable
intoxication.
There was no apparent argument or scuffle, but Hyvönen stabbed the man
repeatedly in the back with a knife as the victim lay on the ground. He then cut off
the man’s head, stripped off his tattoos, and removed the fingertips, in order to
render the victim’s body unrecognisable.
The corpse was then further abused by the triumphant displaying of parts of it in a
Tampere restaurant. People did not believe what they were seeing, but assumed it
was something from the props department of a theatre. When the body parts began
to decompose and smell, they were taken to garbage containers in plastic bags.
The second killing was carried out by Butt herself in her apartment in the Pirkkala
district. She stabbed the victim 13 times in the back with a knife and cut his throat.
Butt had met the man the previous evening and had spent around 24 hours with him.
There was no argument between the two of them.
In the view of the court, the thrusting of a knife into the victim’s back up to and
including the handle was ample evidence that the action was not accidental, as Butt
had initially claimed. The 26-year-old victim had lain on the floor, begging for mercy
and for an ambulance.
Neither of these were forthcoming, but instead Butt called Hyvönen to come and cut
up the body. A knife and saw were used, and the pieces were carried to garbage
containers.
The acts came to light and to the attention of police only a day or so later, when Butt
boasted of them in a restaurant. When parts of the second corpse were found from a
garbage bin, the search began for the body of the first victim.
The grisly case has been followed in the Finnish media, not least because of the
"minor TV celebrity" nature of one of the perpetrators.
The circumstances surrounding the killings have also drawn attention to the dangers
of excessive steroid use: there have been studies indicating that illegal hormones and
steroids - particularly in combination with alcohol - cause users to become aggressive
or irritable, and to lose their capacity for self-control. Butt had earlier admitted the
use of hormones in her body-building hobby.
