0 2 - 0 5 - 2 0 0 5 Bodybuilder jailed for drug offences
The Dominion Post
A bodybuilder who imported ephedrine from Pakistan bought through the Internet has been jailed after police also found a hydroponic cannabis operation at his home.
Timothy Hook, 31, a tiler, of Johnsonville, had pleaded guilty in Wellington District Court to importing ephedrine, cultivating cannabis and unlawful possession of prescription medicines. Judge Bridget Mackintosh jailed Hook for one year and granted him leave to apply for home detention.
Ephedrine is a precursor material often used to make methamphetamine. Ephedrine had been legal before October last year, when a law change made it a class C drug, to help curb methamphetamine production. Customs picked up one of Hook's first importations, six bottles with 48 tablets in each. Because of the recent law change he was warned that the drug was illegal.
However, a second importation from Pakistan was identified. Judge Mackintosh said police and Customs arranged a controlled delivery to Hook of 200 tablets.
When police searched Hook's home they found 12 cannabis plants, 12 seedlings and 24 recently propagated plants in a cupboard under the stairs.
The judge said police believed it was an operation that could have produced more than 680 grams with a street value of more than $7000.
Police also found prescription drugs, such as testosterone. Judge Mackintosh said she accepted that the ephedrine and medicines were for his own use as a bodybuilder.
She said Hook told police that he did not realise that buying dietary supplements through the Internet was a crime. Hook had also been growing the cannabis for his own use.
