Commonly used supplement would be added to list of federally controlled anabolic steroids
[Betterhumans]
The commonly used supplement DHEA faces strict regulation in the US under a newly introduced senate bill. On May 26, Senators John McCain (R-Arizona), George Allen (R-Virginia) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) introduced the bill, S. 1137, which aims to add DHEA to the list of federally controlled anabolic steroids. DHEA—dehydroepiandrosterone—is a steroid-like compound involved in the production of the hormones testosterone and estrogen, amongst others. DHEA declines with age, making it a popular antiaging supplement for people seeking to fight age-related diseases and maintain lean muscle mass. Opponents of the supplement claim it can cause adverse side effects such as liver damage and stroke, but advocates including the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine say there's no scientific evidence for the claims. If the new senate bill passes, over-the-counter sales of DHEA would be halted and users could face criminal charges. Opponents of such supplement regulations have created a Website called Save Our Supplements to facilitate communication with senators and representatives from people who want to keep DHEA freely available. |
