Man accused of trying to cause miscarriage

DUNCANNON - A Perry County man has been charged with providing his pregnant ex-girlfriend with animal steroids in the hope that she would miscarry, arrest records state.

Gregory Lynn Kline, 34, of the 400 block of New Bloomfield Road in Duncannon, has been charged with aggravated assault of an unborn child, aggravated assault and delivery of drug paraphernalia.

"The allegation is that he gave her the drugs so she would have a miscarriage," Perry County District Attorney Charles Chenot said. "I don't think he had a lot of concern for the mother, either."

Duncannon police said Kline gave his ex-girlfriend two 60 milliliter bottles of clenbuterol [Archief Clenbuterol] and four packs of needles on June 20. The woman told police Kline gave her the drugs to help her lose weight.

Court records state the woman is six weeks' pregnant with Kline's child and that he has said that he didn't want her to have the baby.

Chenot said the woman became suspicious about what the drugs would do to the fetus and did not take them.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, clenbuterol is a growth-promoting drug, and its illegal use in show animals is linked to its ability to induce weight gain and a greater proportion of muscle to fat.

It is not licensed for any use in the U.S. Some countries have approved it for use in animals not used for food, such as to treat respiratory problems in horses.

In humans, its side effects include headaches, tremors, muscular cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures and, possibly, death, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Kline was arraigned last week before District Judge Daniel McGuire and released on $15,000 bail.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for July 6. It was unclear if Kline had hired an attorney.
