2 3 - 0 7 - 2 0 0 5 Drug kingpin skips his sentencing
By KIBRET MARKOS A Cliffside Park bodybuilder facing 20 years in prison for running a prescription-drug ring skipped his sentencing Friday, becoming a fugitive.
Alberto Castane was arrested in August 2003 after a six-month investigation exposed a scheme in which he bought prescription medication from drug users and resold them at higher prices. Authorities said the ring, led by the 35-year-old bodybuilder and operated by five others, brought in millions, including nearly $10 million in prescription drugs that were seized in a series of raids two years ago. Castane pleaded guilty to leading a narcotics network, a first-degree offense under New Jersey's "kingpin" statute that carries a penalty of up to life in prison. As part of his plea deal, Castane accepted a 20-year term with nine years before parole. Castane was originally held on $2.5 million bail following his arrest but a judge later reduced the amount to $100,000 and he was released. On the day he was to be sentenced, however, Castane was nowhere to be found. "I have not seen my client, nor have I been able to reach him by phone," his lawyer, Kenneth Marshall, told Superior Court Judge Donald Venezia in Hackensack. "His wife said she hasn't seen him in the past couple of days." Marshall said he last saw Castane two weeks ago in Manhattan. Although he had two phone numbers for Castane, he said, the lines were disconnected or out of service in the last two weeks. Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Thomas Kearney requested a fugitive warrant, which Venezia issued. "He is not going to go far," Kearney said later. Castane ran the ring from two apartments in Cliffside Park and Fairview, which he also used as stash houses, prosecutors said. The phone number for his last known address, in the Bronx, wasn't in service Friday. Castane's brother, Rolando, who is charged with participating in the same drug ring, also lives in the Bronx. His number has been disconnected. Triggering the investigation was an unintended discovery by a Hasbrouck Heights detective, who pulled over a car in early 2003 and found a box of Serostim, a growth hormone used for the treatment of weight loss among AIDS patients. As the probe continued, undercover detectives bought thousands of dollars' worth of drugs from Castane and eventually uncovered what turned out to be one of the largest prescription drug rings in Bergen County. Castane had deployed runners at Manhattan clinics where intravenous drug users could get free AIDS medication, authorities said. For $200, or a bag of heroin, the runners obtained the AIDS drugs, which sold for $1,700, they said. Clients included bodybuilders who use it as steroid. Investigators said Castane and others also shipped nearly a dozen other types of AIDS drugs to Florida and California, where wholesale distributors sold them to pharmacies. The network kept growing and eventually began dealing in prescription painkillers such as OxyContin and Percocet, they said. The cases of the five other defendants, who are facing various drug charges, are pending, Kearney said. 2 9 - 0 4 - 2 0 0 6 Bodybuilder sentenced to 20-year term
TOM TRONCONE A Cliffside Park bodybuilder who spent eight months as a fugitive was sentenced Friday to 20 years in state prison on drug kingpin charges. Alberto Castane, 36, must serve nine years before he is eligible for parole. He faces up to five additional years behind bars on a separate charge of bail jumping, for which he will be arraigned May 8, authorities said.
Castane was arrested in August 2003 in one of the largest
prescription-drug busts in Bergen County Sentencing for Castane's girlfriend, Vivina Zuluaga, and his brother, Rolando, both charged as accomplices in the drug ring, was postponed for a week. Castane employed people to stake out Manhattan clinics that distributed free AIDS medications. The employees paid money or swapped packets of heroin for the drugs, which could fetch as much as $1,700 at area fitness centers. He was charged under New Jersey's drug kingpin statute and faced life in prison, but pleaded guilty in exchange for the 20-year sentence. "He was the leader of a network that stretched up and down the East Coast, from New York to Florida," said Assistant Bergen County Prosecutor Thomas Kearney. Castane was captured this month while squatting in a high-rise in the Bronx. |
