Canseco the target of death threat

NEW YORK - Two weeks after the publication of his tell-all book, "Juiced," Jose Canseco has alienated himself from most of the close-knit fraternity of baseball.

But while the bulky former slugger and admitted steroid user has shrugged off criticism from former teammates and opponents, this week he confronted a far more serious matter: a death threat.

Canseco received the threat via an E-mail to his Web site, where he is currently selling everything from autographed copies of his book to signed game jerseys.

"We alerted the FBI and they believe it was a credible threat," said Canseco's attorney, Robert Saunooke.

Saunooke was at a New York midtown Barnes & Noble on Wednesday for his client's book signing but wouldn't go into the E-mail's contents.

"We know the E-mail comes from an AOL account, but the FBI won't tell us which region of the country," he said. "The local branch of the FBI in that area is investigating the matter."

If Canseco was worried, he wasn't showing it Wednesday. Dressed in a short-sleeved silk white tuxedo shirt, blue blazer, jeans and shades, the one-time Yankee and "Bash Brother" beamed for photos before holding court at the rear of the store.

Also on Wednesday, the Indians' Juan Gonzalez became the latest player to dispute allegations in Canseco's book that claimed he, too, used steroids.

"It's not true. . . . I never saw needles. I never saw pills. I never saw anything. . . . The only guys who have put needles in my body are doctors," Gonzalez said.
