Bonds awaits grand jury, might face Mitchell probe

CHICAGO — San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds could learn as early as Thursday whether the federal government will drop its perjury investigation or continue probing for another six months.

The federal grand jury, which has been listening to testimony since 2005 on whether Bonds committed perjury during his testimony about BALCO in 2003, is set to expire this month, most likely Thursday or July 26, said Mike Rains, Bonds' attorney.

If no indictment is handed up and the grand jury is not reconvened, Commissioner Bud Selig could attempt to order Bonds to cooperate with former senator George Mitchell in his performance-enhancing drug investigation, as Selig did with Jason Giambi of the New York Yankees.

The U.S. Attorney and Selig declined to comment.

"Maybe (Giambi) is a test case to go after Barry," Rains said. "But as long as the grand jury is pending, he will not talk to anybody."

Giambi met with Mitchell last week after his May comments to USA TODAY prompted Selig to urge a sit-down.

The Mitchell investigation has been seeking information on whether Bonds used steroids, according to professional bodybuilder Emeric Delczeg, who cooperated with the investigation.

Delczeg, 55, a Bulgarian who said he used steroids for 30 years, told USA TODAY he met Mitchell's investigators last year in Burlingame, Calif. He was interviewed for an hour at the Hyatt Regency, answering questions about himself, steroids and Bonds.

"They didn't ask about anyone else, but wanted to know about Barry Bonds," Delczeg said.

Mitchell, refusing to discuss anyone he has interviewed, declined to comment.

"They asked me, in my opinion, whether (Bonds) took steroids," Delczeg said. "I told them I'd be very surprised if he did. This guy, Barry Bonds, is different. He was so paranoid about supplements. I can't see him taking something illegal."
