Eduardo Kawak is overleden (getbig.com May 23, 2006)
Afgelopen zondag is, op 47-jarige leeftijd, bodybuilder
Eduardo Kawak overleden. Waar hij was is niet
duidelijk. Volgens GetBig.com was hij in China, maar
een Franse bodybuildingboard
die de GetBiggers als bron gebruiken spreekt van Japan. Ook over de sterfdatum is onenigheid. De ene bron noemt
23/5/06, de andere 22/5/06.
Kawak overleed aan een hartaanval.
In de jaren tachtig was Ed Kawak een populaire bodybuilder, die een voor die tijd ongewone
massa op het podium zette. In artikelen afficheerde Kawak zich als hard core:
hij at duizenden kilocalorieën per dag en trainde zwaar.
Kawak wond een paar keer de Universe en de World. In 1999 liep hij zijn laatste wedstrijd. Toen werd hij
dertiende op de Masters Olympia.
Op GetBig.com is de onvermijdelijke discussie over een verband tussen anabolen en de voortijdige
dood van Kawak alweer ontbrand.
Dat ligt voor de hand. Enkele dagen geleden stierf Eric Otero.
In maanden daarvoor overleden
worstelaar Eddie Guerrero, Arnold Buurman,
Fanny Barrios, Don Youngblood,
Claudia Bianchi, Trevor Smith en
Sonny Schmidt. Het is maar een greep, er zijn er meer.

Het geld zit bij Figure (Los Angeles Times May 22, 2006)
Artikel over het alsmaar populairder wordende Figure-fenomeen in bodybuilding.
"The evolution was also prompted by a reaction to female bodybuilders' physiques, according to
Steve Downs, chairman of the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation, a pro group that also includes
figure (the amateur wing is the International Natural Bodybuilding Federation).
"In bodybuilding," he said, "as the athletes became leaner with more emphasis on muscularity,
even in the natural ranks, women themselves weren't that enthralled with it." Figure, he adds,
allows training, discipline and competition without the blown-up physiques.
This new category also eliminates the justification for anabolic steroids and other muscle-enhancing
substances, long tied to bodybuilding. Though there is talk of drug use among figure competitors
(including diuretics and ephedra), many in the industry say the sport has far less abuse than bodybuilding.
"It doesn't make a lot of sense for women to be taking steroids in figure," Jim Manion, president
of the National Physique Committee, an amateur bodybuilding federation, said. "We don't get many people
in the audience saying, 'Wow, that girl's been juicing.' " "

De Duitse
Manfred Hoeberl, beroemd boomstamslingeraar en vrouwenwerper, zou in de nineties de eerste gebruiker zijn geweest.
"He was one strong mofo though", aldus David Paul. "His arms were 27 inches. I'd guess that 4-5
inches of that was from the oil."

IFBB-bodybuilder Eric Otero overleden (getbig.com May 16, 2006)
Familieleden hebben Eric Otero dood in zijn flat gevonden.
Het gerucht gaat op de boards, en is bevestigd door bodybuildingjournalist Peter McGough. "He is confirmed dead",
aldus McGough. "Found in his apartment by
his family. Autopsy is due today or tomorrow."
De precieze doodsoorzaak is nog niet bekend, al ligt de speculatie dat middelengebruik de dood van Otero heeft
veroorzaakt voor de hand.
Volgens een poster op GetBig.com zou Otero binnenkort vader worden.

Een geweldige draad op GetBig.com over waarschijnlijk de meest getalenteerde bodybuilder uit de jaren zeventig. En tachtig.
Misschien wel van ooit.
Een fotootje van de dan zeventigjarige Myth - met knoeperts van armen - verleidt ouwe rot CS om zijn ervaringen met
Oliva te posten. CS kent Oliva al sinds 1974, en trainde met de reus in de eighties, vlak nadat die door zijn
lieftallige echtgenote was neergeschoten, maar nog voordat Oliva besloot toch maar van mevrouw te scheiden.
Klaar voor een beetje geschiedenis?
"In the 70s Sergio used Dianabol since there really wasn't mush else to use. When we were training we used
Anadrol 50,
Sustanon,
Test,
Halotestin,
Deca,
Winstrol V
and a few others. Pretty much what ever we could get
our hands on. We had a Pharmacist about two blocks from the gym who would fill up our bag."
"Sergio didn't really need drugs to be big and he didn't respect guys that thought this was the only way
to make gains."
Sergio trainde snoeihard, herinnert CS zich, op een manier waar Arthur Jones trouwens
niet blij mee zou zijn.
His workouts were always brutal. If I complained about the pace, he'd go crazy and bury me. We did chest and back
on the same day, triceps and biceps on another and legs and shoulders. We trained six days a week and each body part
twice a week. Between 20 and 30 sets per body part. About an hour and a half per body part."
Tsja. Dan ben je natuurlijk blij dat er een blok verderop een aardige pharmacist woont.
"Sergio has had just about every joint replaced so he really can't train heavy or he'll destroy the replacement
joints. I was recently told I need shoulder replacement but I'm going to wait since the doctor said I would have
to give up training the way I'm accustomed to. Thanks to all the injectable testosterone." Wat dat aangaat is
het in Nederland net zo. Ook hier krijgt de ene na de andere old timer nieuwe plastic gewrichten.
Ook nog leuk: Sergio had bijna in de Schwarzenegger-klassieker Predator gezeten - een documentaire over
ongewone levensvormen in het tropisch regenwoud.
"He was offered a part by Arnold in Predator but made too many demands and wanted too much money so they told
him to forget about it."

Olympiabodybuilder Rodney St.Cloud stript weer, bouwt websites (New York Daily News)
Dat hij anabolen gebruikte, ach, wat verwacht je anders van een Olympia-bodybuilder? Dat hij zijn fysiek opbouwt
met boterhammetjes pindakaas en een vitaminepilletje?
Maar toen Rodney St. Clouds
pakketten groeihormoon en dbol uit Thailand werden onderschept schrok de stad
New York zich alsnog een hoedje. Zeker toen uitlekte dat de bodybuilder geld bijverdiende door te strippen.
St. Cloud raakte alles kwijt. Maar nu is hij weer terug. Als stripper, welteverstaan.

Vader had losse handen, zoon werd bodybuilder (The Royal Gazette May 09. 2006)
David Ingham - pardon: dr. David Ingham - over zijn jeugd in Bermuda. Ingham groeide op op een
boerderij waar de politie niet durfde te komen.
