Conte, USADA mum on meeting

By Dick Patrick, USA TODAY

A day after the FBI raided his San Mateo, Calif., home, neither Victor Conte nor his lawyer, Robert Holley, would comment on reports that Conte met with U.S. Anti-Doping Agency officials last week seeking to build cases against track athletes.

"We can't confirm or deny any specific meeting," said USADA counsel Travis Tygart. "But it's no secret we've continually sought to meet with Victor Conte. Presumably, his knowledge and cooperation would be valuable in the fight against doping in sport."

Conte, the founder of Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative, has been indicted on steroid trafficking charges. He has said he provided several athletes, including star sprinter Marion Jones, with banned performance-enhancing drugs. Jones has denied the allegations.

In Wednesday's raid, the FBI copied the hard drive of Conte's computer, seeking evidence that he might have participated in the leaking of secret grand jury testimony. Conte and Holley previously have denied leaking grand jury evidence.

In secret federal grand jury testimony published by the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds acknowledged using a clear and a cream substance he got from his personal trainer, Greg Anderson. Bonds told the grand jury, according to the Chronicle, that he did not know the substances were performance-enhancing drugs. New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi, however, described using various illegal steroids, including how he used syringes to inject human growth hormone into his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks.

Conte is awaiting trial in U.S. District Court in San Francisco on steroid-conspiracy charges for allegedly distributing illegal drugs to more than 30 baseball, football and track and field stars. Also indicted are Anderson; BALCO vice president James Valente; and Remy Korchemny, a veteran track coach.

A hearing in the case, scheduled for Monday, has been rescheduled for March 16.
