New tape could tie area man to killings

The News-Press

Tape recordings of bodybuilder David Bieber placing bets with bookmakers are being used in court to help prove he shot and killed a British police officer.

Bieber, 38, of Fort Myers, had been one of Lee County's most wanted fugitives for almost nine years when he was arrested last Dec. 31 in the murder of 34-year-old Ian Broadhurst. Broadhurst and officer Neil Roper, 45, had stopped Bieber in Leeds after spotting him driving a stolen BMW.

The officers were preparing to take Bieber to jail when he allegedly pulled a 9-mm pistol and shot them both. Roper was shot in the shoulder and lower back but survived.

Prosecutors say Bieber also fired at a third officer who arrived on the scene — officer James Banks — but Banks survived when a bullet hit a radio hanging on his belt.

Bieber is on trial for murder, two counts of attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger a life and possession of ammunition. He is a graduate of Fort Myers High School. Bieber's voice was taped by the officers as he was questioned inside a police car.

According to reports published by the Yorkshire Evening Post, the voice on the police tape matches those on the bookmakers' tapes, which were made automatically when customers called to place bets. The Evening Post reported that language expert Peter French testified "the chances of these two sets of recordings coming from two different people is a very remote possibility."

French added that Bieber's accent was a mixture of a southern drawl and Yorkshire dialect.

Earlier this week, jurors heard the tape recorded by police after being warned by a judge about its shocking nature. "Do you wanna er ... put cuffs on him?" Roper can be heard asking Broadhurst.

"Up to you. Do you wanna?" Broadhurst responds. "Yeah, double safety, mate," Roper says.

Seconds later, Roper can be heard shouting, "He's got a gun!"

Next come four gunshots. Broadhurst, already shot through the chest, then can be heard pleading for his life: "No, don't, don't ... please, please, no."

Prosecutors say the next shot heard is Bieber killing Broadhurst with a bullet to his head as he lay on his back.

Bieber was arrested five days later in a hotel 100 miles away. In Lee County, Bieber is suspected of hiring a hit man to kill fellow bodybuilder Markus Mueller, 29, of Bonita Springs. He's also suspected of trying to have an estranged girlfriend killed.

The search for Bieber was featured several times on the "America's Most Wanted" television show in the years before he was arrested.

British police say Bieber was living under an assumed name and working as a bouncer.
