Ex-fiancee stabbed through the heart

A body-building asylum seeker was given a life sentence yesterday for murdering his former fiancee by stabbing her in the heart.

Iraqi national Ari Abdullah launched a frenzied attack on nursery nurse Samantha Anderson after she went round to the flat they had once shared to pick up her post.

The 30-year-old steroid user used a leather weight-belt and kitchen knife to inflict 45 wounds on his 29-year-old ex-partner. Abdullah, who is of Kurdish descent, was given a life sentence at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday, but family and friends of his victim broke down in the public gallery after hearing he could be out in less than 12 years.

Judge John Milford told Abdullah he would have to serve a minimum of 11 years and eight months.

Abdullah, who arrived illegally in 2002 before being given extended stay in the UK, admitted murder but insists he remembers nothing of the attack at his flat in Vallum Court in Newcastle's West End on October 30, after consuming bottles of whisky and gin. He held his head in his hands as the court heard how Miss Anderson - who had been a popular nursery nurse at Newcastle's Buffer Bears - had struggled to escape as he attacked her.

After staggering to her feet, Miss Anderson managed to prop herself up against a wall but Abdullah had armed himself with a 21cm-long knife and stabbed her 14 times. Julian Smith, prosecuting, said: "Injuries to her fingers clearly show her trying to ward off the knife.

"It was the wound to her heart which caused such catastrophic blood loss it would have caused death in a few moments."

After the attack, the court heard Abdullah had taken a small knife and cut himself, before using a can of petrol to douse her body and the flat.

It was the strong smell of fumes which alerted a friend, who had gone to check on Abdullah, that something was wrong.

When police arrived, Abdullah tried to stop them gaining entry to the ground-floor flat in the 20-storey block.

But once they entered they found Samantha's body lying on the floor and two blood-covered knives nearby.

It took three officers to carry Abdullah away. The family and friends of tragic nursery nurse Samantha Anderson yesterday told of a pretty, loving and popular woman.

Her mother, Mrs Valerie Anderson, of Cramlington, said: "When Samantha died in October last year, we were robbed of a loving, much-loved daughter and sister. We know nothing will ever bring her back, but we take comfort from the fact that everyone who knew her - family, friends and colleagues - will all have some very special memories of Samantha which they can cherish forever. It is consolation to us that the person who did this has admitted his crime and will be properly punished."

Buffer Bear nurseries manager Denise Maddison said: "Sam was a fantastic nursery nurse who loved her work."

Det Insp Steve Wade, who headed the investigation, said: "Samantha was a much-loved woman who was totally dedicated to her job as a nursery nurse."
