Recensie van Game Of Shadows, het spraakmakende boek over Balco, anabolen, Barry Bonds en
baseball door Dan Connolly. Het boek is door de Affaire Grimsley dubbel actueel geworden,
aldus Connolly.
"Here's my take: It's not an easy read, but invest the time. It's worth it to get a blow-by-blow account of
what has become one of the most fascinating and disturbing periods in the history of sport.
More than anything, though, Game of Shadows left me with a pervasive, sinking feeling that this drug-stained
era is far from over.
And that the worst is yet to come."
Game of Shadows maakt duidelijk dat de strijd tegen doping niet alleen meer via de dopingtest uitgevochten
kan worden, zegt Connolly. "Therefore, as much as the media and public call for stronger drug policies, the smoking guns in these stories
have come from investigative work, not positive tests."
""You can't only depend on drug testing with doping," said Dr. Gary Wadler,
an associate professor at New York
University School of Medicine and a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency. "You need good technology and
good intelligence. That's what we've seen in BALCO, and what we've seen here, diligence and intelligence."
For there are people out there whose sole focus and passion is to help athletes gain an illegal edge. There are
scientists who are fully dedicated to creating undetectable drugs. And there are athletes who are desperate to
get and stay at the elite level."

Douane onderschept "nieuw" anabool uit de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten (AAP)
Interessant nieuwbericht over een onderschepte zending uit de Verenigde Emiraten. Het is voor het eerst
dat we de Emiraten als land van herkomst tegenkomen, al vertellen politiediensten al langer dat ze een groeiende
activiteit van de anabolenmaffia in het Midden-Oosten waarnemen.
Het berichtje is ook interessant vanwege de
middelen die werden verscheept: naast het klassieke stanozolol en methandrostenolone heeft het lab ook mestalone
gevonden.
Mestalone is eigenlijk een DDR-anabool. Na de Val van de Muur heeft het nog even gecirculeerd, maar daarna raakte het in
de vergetelheid. In de jaren negentig herontdekte Pat Arnold het min of meer,
toen hij in de literatuur dook. Enkele jaren later verstopten supplementenmakers het hormoon in
"kruidenpreparaten" voor paarden, en nog niet zo lang geleden ontdekten dopingjagers het
product bij een surfer. En nu zit er dus kennelijk ook in Verenigde Arabische Emiraten een
dopingdealer die het spul levert.

Verleden als anabolendealer kost politicus zijn kop (Spartanburg Herald-Journal June 10, 2006)
Darryl Mast is apotheker en kandidaat voor de House of Representatives van zijn staat. Maar
omdat je in de VS als veroordeelde geen politieke functies mag vervullen, betekent het uitlekken van
zijn verleden als anabolendealer dat die benoeming niet doorgaat.
"FBI agents arrested Mast in February 1997 on federal charges of possession with
intent to distribute anabolic steroids, according to court documents. He pleaded
guilty on April 28 that year and was sentenced on July 30.
The state Board of Pharmacy indefinitely suspended Mast's license in 1999. The
board reinstated his license in 2004.
Mast said he was an aspiring bodybuilder at the time. He said the arrest changed
his life.
""I made a mistake and I was wrong," Mast said. "But I got saved, and I
acknowledge God in all things."

treatment after the misuse of anabolic steroids.
The Royal Glamorgan in Llantrisant has recently seen as many as one case a week, the BBC has learned.
Users can develop muscle abscesses, and according to a registrar, each case costs the NHS on average
£2,000."

Noorse politie maakt geen zaak van Trenabol (Aftenposten 08 Jun 2006)
"A professional Norwegian soccer player for the
Lillestrøm soccer club (LSK) is no longer under
investigation after allegedly receiving a package of
steroids in the post.
The police said they're dropping the case against the
LSK player, who isn't being publicly identified, because
it's not illegal to possess the drugs for personal use.
The player first fell under suspicion when customs
authorities halted a package mailed to him from Germany.
The package contained the anabolic substance called
"trenabol."
LSK officials confirmed on their own website that one of
their players had been called in for police questioning.
The player himself said he was confounded by the case
against him.
If found guilty of possessing illegal substances, the
player could have been been barred from professional
soccer for four years."

Wada wil naar de rechter om rapport Emile Vrijman (ANP)
Dick Pound, het opperhoofd van Wada, is not amused door het rapport dat Vrijman
heeft geschreven in opdracht van Lance "Je Kunt Me Toch Niet Pakken" Armstrong. Dat rapport
pleitte Armstrong vrij, en stelde dat Wada zelf de voorwaarden schiep waaronder de Armstrong-affaire zich afspeelde.
Wada zou het dopinglab hebben gedwongen de originele codes van de monsters in het dossier op te nemen. Daarmee kon
een Franse krant later zien welke monsters van Armstrong waren, aldus Vrijman.
"Volgens Dick Pound ontbeert het rapport elke
professionaliteit en objectiviteit.
Het WADA gaat zich beraden over het nemen van gerechtelijke
stappen tegen de onderzoekscommissie en andere betrokken
organisaties, waaronder de UCI."

In de Britse nep-anabolen uit Northamptonshire zat helemaal niks (New Statesman 22nd May 2006)
In een discussie over vervalsingen herinnert inspecteur zich hoe de Britse politie hem riep bij
een ontmantelde anabolenfabriek.
"I was staggered a few years ago to be asked by what was then the National Crime Squad to visit a
factory in some remote farm buildings in Northamptonshire. The police had been carrying out
surveillance on the place for some time and thought it was a simple drug-making unit. It
turned out to be a fake steroid production unit. When the police raided the place, the foreman
in the unit took great delight in grabbing a handful of the white powder and putting it in his
mouth and saying it was quite harmless. He was right - it was."
