Tulsa Teacher Arrested In Steroid Probe
High School Coach Accused Of Selling Steroids To Students
May 24, 2005

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. -- An undercover drug sting that led to the arrest of
a Tulsa high school teacher and coach on complaints of selling steroids to
several Broken Arrow youth, police say.
Police became suspicious after a growing number of steroid users began
turning up in regular arrests, Sgt. Brandon Gilstrap said. Officers also
made street contact with several 17- and 18-year-old steroid users in
recent weeks.
"These were big 18-year-olds," he said.
Scott Wayne Moody, 38, was jailed Friday on numerous drug and conspiracy
complaints involving steroids and Xanax.
Moody was hired in August to teach Oklahoma history at Tulsa's Webster
High School. He also coached the school's volleyball, basketball and golf
teams, said John Hamill, public information officer for Tulsa Public
Schools.
The district had decided before Moody's arrest not to renew his teaching
contract, Hamill said.
"The decision had no relationship to the arrest," Hamill said. "There has
been no evidence whatsoever to indicate any activity involving drugs by
Mr. Moody on the Webster campus or with Webster students."
Police said none of the alleged customers were Webster students but
several attended Broken Arrow High School.
Gilstrap would not say if the teens played sports for the school.
"We found more than four (teen) users," Gilstrap said. "All of them were
Broken Arrow High School students."
Police said Moody also is accused of selling steroids to adults at a local
gym.
Investigators believe that Moody traveled once a month to Mexico to buy
the steroids. He would travel there with about $6,000 to $10,000 and come
back to sell those drugs for as much as $50,000, police said.
"He was going to leave Friday (for Mexico) when we took him down,"
Gilstrap said. "We bought his last 10 bottles."
Police also arrested James Marsh, 29, of Broken Arrow on related
complaints, reports show.
The federal Drug Enforcement Agency also is continuing to investigate the
alleged steroid activity, Gilstrap said.
