Zending anabolen voor brandweerman onderschept
Een brandweerman van het Amerikaanse Grayson County is gearresteerd toen hij via de post een partij anabolen
ontving. Het pakje uit Thailand bevatte 17 ampullen, twintig injectienaalden en zeven plastic zakjes met
elk duizend tabletten anabolen.
De zending was bedoeld voor de 39-jarige Travis Franklin Pickle, die al veertien jaar bij de brandweer werkte.
Hij was tevens reservist bij de politie. Toen douaniers het verdachte pakje openden en anabolen aantroffen,
waarschuwden ze de politie. Narcoticarechercheurs doorzochten het huis van Pickle toen het pakje werd bezorgd.
Volgens de wet van Texas kan de brandweerman voor zijn pakket anabolen 10 tot 99 jaar celstraf krijgen.
De politie heeft Pickle ontslagen.

'Ik ben blij dat het er op zit', zegt James Obson. 'Ik hoop dat ik mijn leven terugkrijg.' De brandweerman
uit de Amerikaanse staat Indiana heeft toegegeven dat de vierhonderd pillen methandrostenolone, die hij
september 2001 via een postpakket ontving, van hem waren. De pillen kosten Obson, die al sinds 1976 in dienst
is, waarschijnlijk zijn baan. Hij hoeft niet de gevangenis in, maar krijgt wel een proeftijd van een jaar.

DEA pakt Mister September op voor anabolenhandel
De DEA heeft een mannelijk model opgepakt voor handel in anabolen. De 28-jarige Michael Jason Roper
was brandweerman, maar stond ook op de kalender waarmee het Firefighters Burn Institute geld inzamelt.

Aan de arrestatie van Roper en zijn 37-jarige vriendin gingen twee maandenonderzoek vooraf, waarbij de DEA
undercover-agenten inzette. Bij het echtpaar thuis vonden de agenten meer dan een dozijn verschillende soorten
anabolen. De meeste kwamen uit Mexico, maar er zat er ook eentje bij uit Europa. De agenten vonden ook flesjes
met een doorzichtige vloeistof die volgens field tests GHB was. Tenslotte namen de agenten een kleine
drieduizend dollar cash in beslag.
Volgens een woordvoerder van het instituut dat de kalender uitgeeft is de kalender waarvoor Roper poseerde
belangrijk. Jaarlijks brengt die honderdduizend dollar in het laatje. Het instituut gaat de modellen in het
vervolg op een andere manier uitkiezen. "Geen wedstrijden meer", aldus directeur Brian Rice. "Hopelijk voorkomen
we zo wat er nu is gebeurd. Dit is natuurlijk niet wat we willen uitstralen."
Nu selecteert het Firefighters Burn Institute modellen via een wedstrijd. De opgepakte Roper en een vriend
wonnen die door een act waarin ze het komische bodybuilderduo Hanz en Franz van Saturday Night Live nadeden.
Aan het einde van die act voeren de mannen een striptease uit.
De kalender blijft ondertussen gewoon in de verkoop.

Capital firefighter is arrested again

A Sacramento firefighter, facing charges of possession and sales of
steroids, was arrested Wednesday along with his girlfriend on suspicion of
intimidating a witness.
A two-month U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigation led to the
Oct. 24 arrests of Michael Jason Roper, 29, and Tonya Sue Conzatti, 37, at
their Roseville home, DEA officials said.
A search of the home in the 7100 block of Claremont Circle revealed more
than a dozen types of testosterone-based steroids manufactured in Mexico
and $2,700 in cash.
Roper is charged with 13 counts of sale and possession of steroids, and
Conzatti with 18.
The couple were out on bail when DEA agents arrested them Wednesday in the
4300 block of Watt Avenue. Both are scheduled to appear in Placer Superior
Court today for an early settlement conference, which predates a
preliminary hearing.
DEA spokesman Richard Meyer said the investigation is continuing and that
he could not release details of the new arrests.
He also would not say whether other firefighters were involved in the
agency's investigation.
Roper has been a firefighter with the Sacramento Fire Department for more
than two years and is featured on the front cover of the 2004 "Feel the
Heat" calendar wearing a Truck 17 helmet.
Roper and fellow firefighter Jeff Rempfer are featured on the September
page of the calendar. They won their spot after doing a striptease during
a talent competition judged by a panel of local female media personalities.
The calendar and its associated events raise more than $100,000 annually
for the Pacific Burn Institute. Brian Rice, president of Local 522 and
director of the Pacific Burn Institute, said that calendar candidates will
no longer be chosen through a talent competition.
"We were moving there before the arrest and had discussed changing the
format," Rice said. "It really wasn't the image we wanted to portray as
firefighters."
He said the selection process has not been determined.
"We're still going to have a calendar, but we aren't going to have that
type of event to determine who is in it," Rice said.
Sacramento fire officials said Roper is on paid administrative leave
pending the outcome of the DEA investigation.

Local fireman 'saved by his muscles'

CANTON TOWNSHIP -- You might say a Canton Township fireman was
"saved by his muscles," when he fell from the second story of a
house.
Frank Soltesz was battling the fire on Forest-Dale Avenue Southwest.
Flames were everywhere and Frank, who was the "2004 Firefighter of
the Year," fell to the ground while he worked on the second story of
the back of house.
Doctors say his injuries probably would have been more serious if he
wasn't a life-long bodybuilder.
"They said his back could have been broken if it was not for his
physical physique," said Kim McPherson, the firefighter's sister.
His family says Frank is bedridden and in pain, but should be up and
around again in a few days.
The 43-year-old is Mr. January in the 2006 Stark County Firefighters
calendar.
