Infants to test milk diabetes link

HUNDREDS of Australian babies have been recruited to test the theory that a protein found in cow's milk could trigger the development of childhood diabetes. [ErGs]

Type one or early-onset diabetes has previously been thought to be linked to genetics – not to diet – but recent animal studies have demonstrated that it could be triggered by the protein found in milk and beef.

Now researchers in Australia have joined an international trial to reduce the incidence of type 1 diabetes in the genetically at risk, in an attempt to determine whether the theory also holds true for humans.

Co-investigator, Associate Professor Patricia Crock from the Newcastle-based Hunter Medical Research Institute, said the study would investigate whether dietary proteins could trigger type one diabetes in children who had inherited a predisposition to the disease.

"We are looking to see if we can modify an infant's diet in the first six to eight months of life to prevent or reduce the incidence of diabetes in children who are genetically at risk," Professor Crock said.

"This involves looking at whether babies who are fed on supplementary milk formulas containing cow's milk protein may be at a higher risk of developing the disease."

Babies involved in the trial will be fed one of two nutritional supplements and monitored over their childhood to determine whether delaying the introduction of cow's milk can reduce the risk of developing diabetes.

Most infants in the study were not expected to develop clinically evident diabetes, Prof Crock said.
