West Palm police investigating steroid allegations among officers
By Andrew Marra
Palm Beach Post
Thursday, August 25, 2005
The West Palm Beach Police Department is investigating allegations
that some of its officers have been using illegal steroids, a police
union official said.
Ernie George, president of the local Police Benevolent Association
union, said he was informed some of the department's police officers
have been called in this week to be tested for steroid use.
Police officials confirmed they have begun an internal affairs
investigation but would not discuss any specifics.
"We have an (internal affairs) investigation, and I'm not at liberty
to discuss it," Police Chief Delsa Bush said.
George said he did not know how many officers had been implicated
but that the probe extends to law enforcement officers from other
agencies.
The West Palm Beach Police Department does not regularly test
officers for steroid use but can do so if it has "reasonable
suspicion," George said.
"Somebody made some complaint, so they're testing them," George
said. "If there's reasonable suspicion, you should be tested."
George said that to his knowledge, no officers have failed the test
and that the allegations may ultimately prove unfounded.
Capt. Mark Anderson, who oversees the department's internal affairs
department, said no one has been suspended or reprimanded but that
the investigation is continuing.

3 officers face inquiry
Delray Beach places them on paid leave
By Chrystian Tejedor
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
October 14 2005
Three Delray Beach Police officers are on paid administrative
leave while their prescription steroid use is investigated,
police and union officials said Thursday.
Officers reportedly responded to advertisements in a national
magazine and visited a doctor who prescribed steroids for
them, said Ernie George, president of the Palm Beach County
Police Benevolent Association.
"The officers thought they were doing the right thing,"
George said. "The company was doing something fraudulent, not
the officers."
The probe into the Delray Beach officers is related to
on-going steroid prescription investigations at the Palm Beach
County Sheriff's Office and the West Palm Beach Police
Department, union Vice President John Kazanjian said.
Investigators turned up the names of officers in a federal
raid on offices in New York or California, Kazanjian said.
Spokespersons from the Delray Beach and West Palm Beach police
departments could not comment on internal affairs probes into
their officers and could not release the names of any officers
under investigation.
A spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office could not confirm
whether an internal investigation was under way.
Union officials, however, said 14 West Palm Beach officers,
four sheriff's deputies and three Delray Beach officers are
under investigation.
