CAIRO, Aug 18 (Kuwait News Agency) -- An Egyptian doctor Thursday warned against hazardous effects of steroids, commonly used nowadays by young people to quickly gain muscle mass, and said such usage could lead to addiction, cancer, heart failure, nervous breakdown and death.

Salah Hashem, a professor of poisons and expert in autopsy at the Azhar university, told KUNA most of the countries worldwide were imposing restrictions on usage of steroids.

Hashem said specialists were exerting efforts to educate people about lethal impacts of steroids, and the provision of sophisticated equipment to discover smuggled substances.

He said steroids included seven substances, like amphetamine, which minimized feeling of fatigue thus increasing endurance. The second kind of steroids are drugs like herion and cocaine.

Hashem said sportspeople were also using a drug called "Lasix." It is used to decreases amount of fluid in body by increasing amount of salt and water lost in the urine. It is used by boxers and wrestlers, who want to get rid of steroids in their bodies to avoid medical tests.

Hashem said other kinds of steroids were used to build muscles and increases endurance. They might be used by female swimmers to have male-like muscles.
