MASON CITY — A Mason City man has received a sentence of nearly four years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute anabolic steroids and money laundering.
Joseph Upshaw, 38, was sentenced to 47 months in federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Mark Bennett.
As part of a plea agreement, Upshaw disclosed that between September 2004 and the spring of 2006 he assisted another Mason City man in a steroid distribution operation.
Upshaw admitted that he assisted in the repackaging of steroids into vials for customers. Sales of the product were conducted on the Internet.
Upshaw admitted that he wired thousands of dollars to individuals in China as payment for steroids.
Upshaw is being held by U.S. Marshals until he can be transported to a federal prison.
In addition to the prison sentence, Upshaw will be required to complete three years of supervised release.
