Murder trial jury told of man's chilling 999 call

A MURDER trial was told how an amateur bodybuilder phoned 999 and admitted: "I've killed my missus."

Ian Craig Grant "lost it" and strangled long-term partner Lisa Wood at their home in Anchorsholme.

The 37-year-old barber is said to have attacked Miss Wood after she told him he was "pathetic" and that she was leaving him to "get a proper man".

After killing his partner in the bedroom of their Lauderdale Avenue home, Grant telephoned the emergency services and told them what he had done.

Preston Crown Court was told Grant, who owns two hair salons in Cleveleys and Kirkham and is a keen bodybuilding enthusiast, became easily angered.

He admitted to police killing Miss Wood, 36, on June 1 this year, but denies it was murder.

John McDermott, prosecuting, said: "He admitted what he had done. He telephoned emergency services and told the operator 'I've killed my missus'.

"He went on to say he had strangled her. It was plain he was clearly upset."

The prosecutor said prior to strangling his partner of 14 years Grant had been sleeping downstairs along with his and Miss Wood's nine-year-old son Joe.

Grant and Miss Wood had been arguing after she told him she was planning to move back in with her mother the next day.

He later went upstairs to use the toilet and checked on his partner, who was still awake.

Mr McDermott added: "In double quick time he told her he didn't want her to leave, but said her attitude was distinctly hostile. She taunted him and told him he was pathetic and that she was going to get a proper man. At that point he lost it and the next thing he was aware of he had strangled Lisa. When it came to his actual memories of strangling her he had no memory at all, but accepted he had strangled her."

The victim's mother June Wood gave evidence, describing the couple's stormy relationship. She told how the defendant had taken anger management classes after hurting a man in the past.

She also revealed her daughter had left Grant, who owns Lush salon in Cleveleys and Grant's Barbers in Kirkham, three times in the past and had been planning to leave the following day.

Mrs Wood said: "Lisa would sometimes come around in the evening because Craig was in a bad mood and it was best to leave him when he was like that. He was easily angered over what seemed like quite small things."

Despite this, Mrs Wood admitted she had never seen Grant turn violent and said he had seemed to accept it when she explained to him that her daughter just needed space for a while.

Arresting officer Sgt Martin Ayerton described how he found Miss Wood and saw the defendant clearly upset immediately after the incident. Sgt Ayerton said: "He was crying on the shoulder of his stepfather and being comforted. He said he wanted to be put in the van because he didn't want to see her taken out in a bag. I said I would."
