FRENZIED ATTACK ON WIFE
Daily Record
14 October 2006
A BODYBUILDER tried to murder his wife in a frenzied knife attack the day after
he was released from jail for a domestic assault.
John Getgood's estranged wife had divorce papers served on him while he was in
prison.
The day after he was freed from Greenock jail, he knifed his wife, Frances, 10
times as she arrived home.
Just hours before the knifing in Honeysuckle Park, Ayr, he met a woman in the
street in the town who asked how he was getting on.
He replied: "I am going to stab her to death."
When she asked who he meant, he said: "Frances."
The High Court in Edinburgh heard that Frances Getgood, 44, believed that the
stabbing only ended when her husband believed he must have killed her.
Keith Stewart, prosecuting, said: "It would have been the evidence of medical
witnesses that she was very fortunate to survive."
A knife with a 12-inch blade was later found.
Former taxi driver Getgood, 48, admitted attempting to murder his wife on July
15 this year.
He also admitted assaulting a Reliance guard, Lisa Dunnachie, 22, to her severe
injury in the cells at Ayr Sheriff Court.
He had been freed from a jail sentence for an assault aggravated by domestic
abuse.
Matt Jackson, defending, said: "It would appear Getgood was extraordinarily
devoted to his wife." Sentence was deferred.

Bodybuilder stabbed wife hours after prison release
The Scotsman
10 Nov 2006
A BODYBUILDER who stabbed his wife ten times hours after getting out of prison for
assaulting her was jailed for seven years yesterday.
John Getgood, 48, phoned his estranged wife, Frances, 44, after he was freed and
warned her he was coming to finish her off.
Mrs Getgood had filed divorce papers while he was in Greenock Prison.
Getgood ambushed his wife as she was unlocking the front door of her home in Ayr.
In a frenzied attack the former taxi driver repeatedly plunged a 12inch blade into
her and left her for dead.
The mother of two survived because the knife hit her breast bone and shoulder blade
and failed to pierce her heart.
After hearing the sentence yesterday, Mrs Getgood stormed out of the High Court in
Glasgow. She said: "It was far too lenient. Put it this way, it was lucky for him
it was a judge he appeared before and not me."
Getgood admitted attempting to murder his wife on 15 July this year at Honeysuckle Park,
Ayr, by repeatedly stabbing her on the body to her severe injury, permanent
disfigurement and to the danger of her life.
He also admitted that at Ayr Sheriff Court, where he appeared on the attempted murder
charge, he seriously assaulted a Reliance guard, Lisa Dunnachie, 22, in the cells by
putting her in a headlock and causing her to fall to the ground.
