Doctor in steroid probe turns in his license
Feds: He gave drugs to people over the Internet without examining them
BY ROBERT E. KESSLER A 73-year-old physician from Coram agreed Thursday to give up his medical license following charges that he had prescribed steroids to people over the Internet without having seen or examined them or monitored their health, according to federal officials. Dr. H. Harry Montazem, of 11 Cabernet Ct., Coram, was accused in a federal civil complaint of violating the federal Controlled Substance Act by issuing prescriptions for testosterone 42 times from September to December 2002. Testosterone is the key male hormone and is popular in the underground bodybuilding commnuity. Montazem has been a licensed physician since 1966, following graduation from the medical school at Tehran University in Iran, according to state records. He represented himself in legal proceedings, but could not be reached for comment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Elliot Schachner said an investigation into the illegal providing of prescription medications over the Internet is continuing. |
