Het houdt niet op, het slechte nieuws voor trainer Trevor Graham. Eerst klapt zijn anabolendealer uit de school, en nu hebben dopingjagers zijn pupil Justin Gatlin, gepakt op testosteron of een precursor van testosteron. Dat heeft Gatlin in een persbericht wereldkundig gemaakt.
Het slechte nieuws vernam Gatlin al op 15 juni. Hij kreeg op 12 juli de bevestiging dat de contra-expertise ook positief is.
Gatlin is hoog verbaasd over de test en ontkent dat hij doping heeft gebruikt. “I cannot account for these results, because I have never knowingly used any banned substance or authorized anyone else to administer such a substance to me”, zegt de sprinter. Gatlin is met de Jamaicaan Asafa Powell wereldrecordhouder op de honderd meter.
Gatlins coach, Trevor Graham, begeleidde eerder het snelste echtpaar vrouw ter wereld, Marion Jones en Tim Montgomery. Die vielen later als klanten van Balco door de man. Jones en Montgomery zaten aan de onzichtbare spullen van Victor Conte.
Gatlin is niet gepakt met een test die, zoals bij wielrenner Landis, de verhouding tussen testosteron en epi-testosteron meet, maar met een ander soort dopingtest. Die ziet de verhoudingen tussen het soort koolstofatomen in de testosteronmoleculen, en maakt daaruit op of het hormoon op natuurlijke wijze is ontstaan, of is gemaakt in een fabriek.
Gatlin heeft de uitslag van zijn B-stalen inmiddels ook binnen, bericht de New York Times.
Gatlin heeft zich in interviews altijd uitgelaten tegen het gebruik van doping. Daarom voelt sportorganisatie USA Track & Field zich ongemakkelijk “Justin has been one of the most visible spokespersons for winning with integrity in the sport of track and field”, reageert USA Track & Field. “Throughout his career he has made clear his willingness to take responsibility for his actions. USA Track & Field is gravely concerned.”
Trevor Graham zegt dat iemand Justin Gatlin stiekem anabolen heeft toegediend, zonder dat Gatlin dat wist. Graham zei op de tv van zijn vaderland Jamaica dat hij wist wie de dader is. "We zullen hem ontmaskeren en hopen dat we het bewijs kunnen leveren", aldus Graham. WASHINGTON — U.S. sprinter Justin Gatlin unwittingly had testosterone cream massaged into his legs by a masseuse who carried a grudge against him before the April race at which he tested positive for steroids, Gatlin's coach Trevor Graham said by phone Sunday. Graham said Gatlin, who faces a lifetime ban from track and field for the positive test for the anabolic steroid, thought the cream was a harmless lotion. Graham said when he walked in on the massage session the masseuse hurriedly stuffed a white jar of the substance in his pocket. Graham declined to name the masseuse, saying he did not want to jeopardize the case. "We know who the person is who actually did this," Graham said by phone from Raleigh, N.C., the home base of his Sprint Capitol team. "Justin is devastated. Myself, too. We're extremely (upset) right now. We are trying to go out and make sure we can prove his innocence, and we hope this individual has the guts to come forward and say he did it." Gatlin's lawyer, Cameron Myler, declined to confirm Graham's account Sunday but said Gatlin intended to prove he was not responsible for the positive test. World Anti-Doping Agency rules allow some latitude in the punishment of positive tests that involve special circumstances, but the rules hold athletes accountable for any substance found in their bodies regardless of how it got there. Graham said Gatlin's positive showed only a small amount of synthetic testosterone or its precursors, so no natural explanation can be offered for it. Because Gatlin, 24, tested positive in 2001 for a stimulant found in his prescription medicine for attention-deficit disorder, he faces the lifetime ban rather than the typical two-year ban for a first-time doping offense for testosterone. Gatlin would lose the world record, but not his three medals from the 2004 Summer Games in Athens if guilty. Graham said he had hired a private investigator to tail the masseuse and was prepared to seek criminal charges against him. Graham said the masseuse, who had been fired by Graham and rehired in April, denied the charge when confronted with it. Volgens een nieuwsbericht van AP hecht de atletiekfederatie IAAF weinig geloof aan de beschuldigingen van Graham. "Zolang niemand iets gezien heeft is er wat ons betreft geen zaak", aldus een zegsman. "In ons beleid is een sporter zelf verantwoordelijk voor wat er in zijn lichaam aanwezig is."

Op de Berlin Golden League van 3 september 2006 zullen de pupillen van Trevor Graham schitteren door afwezigheid. Ze zijn niet welkom, heeft de organisatie gezegd. Het gaat om negen sporters, waaronder Justin Gatlin, Marion Jones, Shaun Crawford en Dwight Thomas. De organisatoren hebben ook andere organisaties opgeroepen atleten uit Grahams stal te boycotten.
