Police and U.S. Customs officials tracked a package containing 12 syringes loaded with steroids to a motorcycle shop in Barstow, where a professional cage fighter was arrested in connection with the illegal transport and possession of the drugs.

Buckley Acosta

Buckley Acosta, 27, of Newberry Springs, was booked Tuesday into the sheriff's jail in Barstow, where he was being held in lieu of $15,000 bail.

U.S. Customs officials contacted Barstow police Tuesday regarding a package of injectable testosterone-based steroids that had been shipped into the United States from Central America, and was bound for the motorcycle shop in the 800 block of East Williams Street. Acosta is an employee at the business, police Sgt. Mark Franey said.

"There were 12 individually packaged, preloaded syringes," Franey said. "They were individually boxed, and all the boxes were in one package."

It was unclear if the drugs were purchased via the Internet, a magazine or other media.

Steroids are often used by bodybuilders and athletes to enhance physical performance. Acosta is a professional cage fighter who has fought in various cage-fighting venues, police said.

Acosta's most recent fight took place at Madness at the Memorial on July 1 at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, where he defeated Jeremy Freitag in the first 47 seconds of the first round, according to sherdog.com, a Web site featuring news on mixed martial arts and ultimate fighting.

Police obtained a search warrant for the business and coordinated the delivery of the package with an inspector for the U.S. Postal Service.

"The package was addressed to the business. That's where we had it delivered," Franey said. "It was a controlled delivery by the U.S. Postal Service."

Once the delivery was made, police and customs officials raided the business and arrested Buckley, Franey said.

Police do not believe the store's owner or managers were aware of the illegal delivery.

Due to the amount of steroids delivered, Buckley faces felony charges of possession of controlled substances for sale. Police will submit the case to the District Attorney's Office today for review, Franey said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Jeremy Bledsoe at (760) 255-5183, or the Barstow Police Department dispatch center at (760) 256-2211.
