1 8 - 0 7 - 2 0 0 6 Ex-officer, accused of sex assault, heads to trial
BY FRANK COZZOLI A former part-time police officer who's had run-ins with the law will stand trial on charges that he sexually assaulted a woman days after she'd broken off their relationship. Eric A. Garonzik, 35, of Oxford Circle, Lower Allen Twp., a bodybuilder, was ordered held for court yesterday after a 45-minute preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert V. Manlove. The Wormleysburg woman, 30, testified she had broken up with Garonzik over his verbal "disrespect," his violent outbursts and her suspicion that he used drugs. Under cross-examination by defense lawyer Matthew Gover, the woman said the breakup came as she was moving into the home Garonzik had rented for them. The woman testified she had been out with friends and was unlocking the back door around 2:15 a.m. July 3 when Garonzik pushed her inside and to the floor. She said he dragged her, checked the call log on her cell phone and accused her of being with another man. The woman said Garonzik dragged her into a bedroom, sexually assaulted her and threatened to harm her dog if she didn't stop screaming. "I was pleading with him to stop, that he didn't want to do this," the woman testified. She said Garonzik started to go for his belt and "then something clicked in his head and he stopped." After Garonzik left, the woman said, she drove to a convenience store and used a pay phone to call 911. Garonzik is charged with indecent assault, aggravated indecent assault and simple assault. He was returned to Cumberland County Prison, where he was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail. Formal arraignment in county court is set for Sept. 5. Yesterday wasn't the first time Garonzik has been in court. In July 1997, about two months after he walked off a brief stint as a part-time police officer in Tower City, Garonzik was charged with sexually assaulting a Harrisburg woman near a Lower Allen Twp. quarry. He pleaded no contest to indecent assault without consent and was fined $100 and sentenced to 12 months of probation. In October 2003, Garonzik was charged with making terroristic threats after Camp Hill police said he threatened to blow up his now ex-wife's home and vehicle. Garonzik pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct in April 2004. He was sentenced to 4 days to 11 months in the county prison and paroled immediately. |
