Abduction suspects remain on the lam
Considered 'very dangerous'
Winnipeg Sun Despite chasing down tips on the whereabouts of two kidnapping suspects, police had made no arrests by press time last night. Rainier Santos, 28, and Justin Rivera, 24, continued to elude capture yesterday, leading police to warn the public to be careful if they encounter them. "They are to be considered very dangerous to anyone who comes across them. It is imperative you contact Winnipeg Police Services if you have knowledge of their whereabouts," said police spokeswoman Const. Shelly Glover. Police believe a fight over drugs broke out Friday evening in a Logan Avenue restaurant between rival Asian gang members and resulted in the abduction of Chi Kien Dao, 20, and Hue Troung, 20. Friends of the victims contacted police after receiving phone calls demanding a large ransom for their return, Glover said. Police found the victims Sunday night in northwest Winnipeg. They were suffering numerous serious injuries and were taken to hospital. A source at the Shapes Nairn Avenue location -- where Santos is a member -- confirmed he checked in for a Saturday afternoon workout. Santos is an avid bodybuilder and was the 2003 Manitoba Novice Bodybuilding middleweight champion. He also placed seventh in the middleweight class at last June's 2004 Provincial Bodybuilding Championships. Rivera is also a bodybuilder but has not competed at the same level as Santos. Rivera was convicted in April 2004 of unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, court records show. That charge stemmed from an April 15, 2003, drive-by shooting. Rivera was given a suspended sentence with two years of probation. He was also not allowed to possess weapons for five years. Three men, who were arrested Monday and charged with two counts of kidnapping and aggravated assault, are still in police custody. Thirty-year-old Viet Chung, 32-year old Peter Chung, and Koachay Thongsakhom, 26, are waiting for a bail hearing. |
