Stepfather held for murder of 12 year old

The Local
28th May 2006

As more details emerge about the murder of a 12 year old girl in Västerhaninge on Saturday morning, the man suspected of killing her and raping her 13 year old friend is expected to be remanded in custody on Sunday afternoon.

There have been no further interviews with the man since Saturday afternoon, but it has been revealed that the murdered 12 year old was the daughter of the 26 year old man's partner.

The man is also suspected of the attempted murder and rape of his stepdaughter's friend, who managed to escape from the apartment and raise the alarm.

The friend is now being treated in hospital. Her injuries are said to be serious but not life-threatening, and her condition on Sunday morning was unchanged.

On Saturday afternoon the 26 year old met his lawyer, Bo Hegestam, who said that his client neither admitted nor denied the crimes, since he had no memory of the night's incidents.

"He feels very unwell and so it hasn't been possible to hold meaningful interviews with him," said Mats Nylén, information officer at Södertorn police.

According to reports in Aftonbladet and Expressen, the man has for a long time been a user of anabolic steroids and is described as a violent person by police and acquaintances.

Aftonbladet said that the man has at his own request been treated for psychiatric problems and has served time in prison for serious assault.

Mats Nylén declined to comment on whether the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the attack, but said that several blood samples had been taken.

"It's routine with this type of crime and the results are expected within a few days," he said.

Police spent most of Saturday carrying out a forensic examination of the apartment.

"I don't want to say anything about the examination or any possible murder weapon at this stage of the investigation," said Nylén.

On Saturday evening police denied earlier reports that both the girls had been raped by the man.

"But that could change during the course of the inquiry - we will be interviewing several witnesses and are awaiting the forensic results.

Students mourn murdered friend

The Local
29th May 2006

The flag outside Tungelsta school, south of Stockholm, was at half-staff this morning, a sombre tribute to the 12-year-old student who was stabbed to death over the weekend.

A moment of silence started the school day Monday. The schoolyard was full of students when the minute-long silence began. Flowers were put down next to a photo of the murdered girl, while some cried and consoled one another.

Because the school suffered after the tsunami in 2004, a crisis group was already organized and ready to be with students during Monday’s classes.

“The atmosphere is very down, but the school is prepared and is ready to meet the students and their needs, said Haninge district’s spokeswoman Margaretha Picano.

Police were quick in detaining the girl’s 26-year-old stepfather. He is in custody for allegedly murdering the girl and raping her 13-year-old friend.

The man’s lawyer, Bo Hegestam, said his client was high on anabolic steroids and alcohol during the alleged murder and is unable to remember anything during that time.

“That is why he can neither admit nor deny what he is being accused of,” Hegestam said, adding that his client is a “very nice guy who has psychiatric problems sometimes.”

The man is due to go through a memory test.

The 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. According to police, her situation was unchanged on Sunday.

Police did a thorough investigation of the apartment Saturday.

“I don’t want to say anything about the investigation or a possible murder weapon for the investigations sake, said Mats Nylén, Södertorn police spokesman.

Tödlicher Cocktail

VON HANNES GAMILLSCHEG
04. Juni 2006
Frankfurter Rundschau

Gesundheitsminister Morgan Johannson will prüfen lassen, ob die Dopingbestimmungen ausreichen.

Stepfather convicted for rape and murder

Paul O'Mahony
The Local
25th October 2006

The 27-year old man who earlier this year killed his 12-year old stepdaughter and raped her 13-year old friend has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict is in line with case put forward by chief prosecutor Stefan Bergman.

The man was convicted of murder and rape by Handen district court.

"There is nothing worse that one could do than rape and murder a child," said Bergman.

Just before the verdict was announced the father of the murdered girl asked the 27-year old if he ever longed for his own son.

"Yes," replied the defendant.

"And I long to meet my daughter. But it is an endless longing," said the girl's father.

He finished by warning the girl's stepfather of the future he can now expect.

"I have a message from the boys in prison: they can hardly contain themselves," he said.

The chairman of the court decided not to take note of the comment.

The defendant stabbed his daughter to death and raped her friend in a flat in the Stockholm suburb of Västerhaninge on May 27th this year. He was under the influence of anabolic steroids, alcohol and sedatives. He claims not to remember anything of the events in question.

A psychiatric analysis yesterday concluded that the man is not seriously mentally disturbed.
