2 8 - 0 5 - 2 0 0 6 TRAFFICKING OF DOPING SUBSTANCES - OPERATION CHARGES 44 PEOPLE
Agenzia Giornalistica Italia Rome - Finance police in Rome have seized more than 40,000 pills and medicines, carried out 65 searches and charged 44 people as part of an detailed investigation into a criminal ring working on the sale of doping drugs and their use by sportsmen. The operations started in a gym in Castelli Romani run by a Romanian aged 44 where it was suspected that he was selling doping drugs used by those attending the gym in order to improve their performance. Monitoring of the gym and its comings and goings led to the identification of 43 yr old C.F., owner of a pharmacy on the coast of Rome who is suspected of supplying illegal drugs and thanks to phone taps, led to the witnessing of numerous sales of the doping substances at the Hippodrome in Capanelle. Amongst those taking the substances was an international professional in the kayaking world and a body building world champion. The blitz, carried out in Lazio and Sicily employing over 230 police, as well as police dogs, led to the seizure of 40,000 pills and 600 phials for intra muscular use including 'epo' and the hormone 'gh'. In total, the operation shed light on the criminal operation working in Lazio and Sicily, made up of 5 people, accused of criminal association with the aim of anabolic substances and doping substances and fraud on the state and led to the identification of the supply channels and the distribution chain leading to the end user, and to charging a further 39 people. The organisation was in a position to issue blank national health service prescriptions and medical stamps via health centres unknown to the professionals involved, producing false prescriptions and fake therapy requests made out to people who proved not to exist, who were deceased or unknown, permitting the medicines to be dispensed, at the cost of the health service and to sell the prohibited substances at the body building gym. |
