Hampden man found dangerous

SPRINGFIELD - A 21-year-old Hampden man has been found dangerous by a judge in Hampden Superior Court and will be held without bail until trial.

According to a police report and to a prosecutor, Joshua Adams, 21, of 59 Old Orchard Road, hit, kicked and threw his girlfriend during a party Aug. 8, and then chased several males who tried to intervene with an ax and a razor, and then with a BB gun and beer bottles.

At a hearing before Judge Constance M. Sweeney Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Timothy Rogers said that Adams also destroyed a Cadillac with an ax, and that once he was in police custody, he broke two windows on a cruiser. When Adams was being booked at the Hampden Police Department, he kicked the cell door continually until he broke the door's dead bolt, according to a report by Officer John A. DiMaio. Adams also broke the booking room telephone and punched a computer monitor, the police report states.

Adams has pleaded innocent to counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, namely a shod foot and an ax, assault and battery, assault and battery on a police officer, malicious destruction of property valued at more than $250, and disruption of court proceedings. Rogers said the last charge stemmed from Adams' shouting loudly when he was brought into the Palmer District Court building.

Adams's lawyer, Perman Glenn III, has said that Adams took steroids before the incident occurred, which affected his behavior. Hampden Police Officer Joshua Dufresne said that when he arrived, Adams was lying down and was drooling from the mouth and said he believed Adams was under the influence of alcohol and a narcotic.

Adams was found by Sweeney Oct. 6 to pose a public danger, and a trial will be held within 90 days under the statute.

A pretrial conference will be held in the next few weeks.
